BIG WINTER COLONY AT BENNING COURSE WASHINGTON D C February 19 There are in the neighborhood of 200 thoroughbreds wintering at the old Benning course always a popular training ground The Benning track has a deop cushion of sand and it is generally possible to gallop horses over it nearly every day during the winter months Among the trainers with horses here this winter are J F Schorr Matt Brady Jere Murphy M Smart W Brcoks P M Burch and F Hopkins All these expert condition ¬ ers of thoroughbreds are quite sweet on the prospects of G W Wingfields thrc2year old General Thatcher a big upstanding colt by Sweep Polestina which is wintering here He will be pointed for both the Preakness and Kentucky Derby
