GREYHOUND VERSUS HORSE Mare Finally Beats Dog After Close Contest Over the Doncaster Course in 1800 Captain Thomas Brown in Anecdotes of Horses published in 1S30 recites the fol ¬ lowing incident Innumerable had been the disputes whether the greyhound or the race horse was the swifter animal when a circumstance took place which fairly put the thing to the test testIn In a match with two horses run on Don caster race course in 1SOO in which one of the horses was drawn the other a mare started to run over the ground alone to in ¬ sure the stake When she had proceeded about a mile a greyhound struck in from the side of the course The rider being anxious to ascertain the curious point pushed on the mare when the greyhound strained every nerve to pass icr The hound kept abreast for a long time but the mare at passing the winning post had the advantage by a head At the distance post five to four was wagered on the greyhound when parallel with the stand it was even betting
