Here and There on the Turf Rancocas ThreeYearOlds ThreeYearOldsZev Zev Is Apparently Best on Form FormBud Bud Lerner Expected to Im ¬ prove proveTheir Their Racing of Last Year Just where the Rancocas Stable threeyear olds will fit in this year is a problem While this extensive racing establishment headed the list of winning owners in 1922 the twoyear olds did not play a particularly important part The stable total won was 5239503 Of the thirtyone horses that were raced fifteen were twoyearolds and all they contributed to this total was 74231 Only two Zev and Edict won in excess of 10000 among the twoyearelds twoyeareldsOf Of course all this may be changed this year and one of the colts in particular Bud Lerner may be expected to improve greatly over his late twoyearold form formThis This colt did not win a race for the Rancocas Stable although he won three races for John j E Madden and it was that form that induced the Rancocas Stable to make the purchase Bud Lerner won on his first time out at Ja ¬ maica and followed up that victory by win ¬ ning both the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica and the Whirl Stakes at Empire City These i races so impressed Samuel C Hildreth that he purchased him for the Rancocas Stable but he was through winning for the year yearThere There was perhaps another reason for the i purchase and that was because Bud Lerner i iI I is a son of The Finn and Drcamsome by Superman It is natural that Hildreth should hold sons of The Finn in high esteem after the brilliant accomplishments of his KaiSang a son of that stallion and Kiluna by Golden Maxim Bud Lerner is probably destined to make a better threeyearold than his two yearold races would indicat Then it was another son of The Fin Zev which was the most successful twoyearold that raced under the Rancocas colors last year This hand ¬ some brown colt was a sensation at Saratoga where he won five races in a row one of his victories being in the United States Hotel Stakes in which among others he beat such good ones as J S Cosdens Dunlin winner of the Hopeful Stakes later Martingale from the same stable Gifford A Cochrans high priced Goshawk Richard T Wilsons Wilder ¬ ness II C Fishers Cartoonist and others of high promise promiseIn In another of his victories he won from Harry Payne Whitneys Enchantment winner of the Kentuckj Jockey Club Stakes later in the fall One other is the sequence of five straight in the Albany Handicap HandicapEdict Edict the other twoyearold that won in excess of 10000 for the Rancocas Stable last year was another that had a run of five straight victories and four of them were scored at Saratoga where she was not beaten in any of her races This filly is a daughter of Jim Gaffney and Royal Message and was bred by A B Hancock HancockShe She began her string of five victories in a row at the Empire City meeting in July and was rated a selling plater by Hildreth in two of her Saratoga races She was also the win ¬ ner of the Schuylerville Stakes for twoyear olds and then wound up by scoring in the Spinaway Stakes the richest of the offerings at Saratoga devoted exclusively to fillies In the Spinaway Stakes Edict took the measure of Sallys Alley among others And this is the same Salkys Alley that came out later to win the Futurity and the Pimlico Futurity FuturityJust Just how far Edict will stay remains to be seen but she is a swiftrunning miss and has already established a reputation Hildreth has seldom been as successful with twoyearolds as he is with horses of more maturity and it is almost a certainty that some of those he has kept over to this season may improve over their form of last year That has been the general rule of his training trainingWhile While Zev and Edict stood out over the others of the stable as twoyearolds there are several others that may show unproved form this year One of these is Rigel a chest ¬ nut son of Ballot and Pictons Pride by Pic ton This colt did not come to hand until comparatively late in 1922 and won his first race at Jamaica October 2 He was the win ¬ ner of five races in all and his last two were victories at Pimlico where he won the Pimlico HomeBred Stakes as well as a threequarters dash Rigal has every chance to be a good threeyearold and he demonstrated last year when he reached his best form that he had plenty of speed Suweep a daughter of Sweep and Sue Smith and accordingly a sister to the good campaigner Bon Homme is another of the establishment that may develop into a goodclass threeyearold Her brother Bon iKomme did not come to himself until late in his twoyearold form formCurtis Curtis was another of the winning Rancocas twoyearolds of last year He is a bay son of Dick Finnell and Glena and accordingly closely related to that remarkable gelding Billy Kelly Curtis showed as a juvenile that he was at least a colt with a remarkable turn of speed but he raced in a fashion to suggest that he may be best at sprinting sprintingOthers Others could be mentioned but it all gets back to the fact that outside of Zev the Ran cocas Stable was not as remarkable for its twoyearolds last year as it was for its horses of more mature age They were the ones that gave the stable its position at the top of the list of winning owners ownersThere There may be a different tale to tell of the Rancocas twoyearolds of 1923 for it is re memberrd that twenty yearlings were bought from Harry Payne Whitneys Brookdale Farm last year These were carefully selected by byHildreth Hildreth and each one of them is well en gaged
