Here and There on the Turf More Derby Aspirants AspirantsR R T Wilsons Wilderness Wildernessand and Tall Timber Excellent Record of Oui Oui E R Bradley s Fast and andStaying Staying Fillies Richard T Wilson president of the Sara ¬ toga Association will have to look to Wilder ¬ ness and Tall Timber for any threeyearold laurels that may come the way of his stable this year Both of these colts were bred by Mr Wilson and each is a son of his Futurity winner Campfirc Each showed plentiful speed as a twoyearold and there are some good judges who expect Wilderness to be one of the crack threeyearolds of this year yearWilderness Wilderness is a chestnut son of CampGre and the Broomstick mare Genesta that raced well under the Wilson colors He won his first race in August at Saratoga and was also first in two other races He scored in a purse race at Belmont Park and then took the National Stakes at Laurel in a big field This was his most notable victory for back of him on that occasion were besides others Dunlin winner of the Hopeful Stakes and Scribble a filly of undoubted speed as well as Vigil The track was muddy and Wilder ¬ ness showed ability to race through such foot ¬ ing swiftly swiftlyTall Tall Timber was a much busier twoyearold than his stablemate and was the winner of six races during the year but Wilderness is held to be his master This is a bay son of Camp fire and Pixy a daughter of Peter Pan and is a colt with a brilliant turn of speed speedIt It must be remembered that Pillory the colt that headed the list of money winners for 1922 is a son of Olambala This makes both Wilderness and Tall Timber closely related on the male side for Campfire their sire was also a son of Olambala It is a strain that goes on and Mr Wilson may have another Pillory in one of these young threeyearolds threeyearoldsJ J S Ward is another owner with a po ¬ tential champion threeyearold in his stable in Donges a chestnut son of Celt and Bessie Melton by Melton This colt began his racing as a twoyearold under the silks of William Perkins and early in the racing season was hailed as the best colt in Kentucky After he had won three races in a row for Perkins he was purchased by J S Ward and in his first race for his new owner he was the win ¬ ner of the Cincinnati Trophy He won his second race for Mr Ward in Canada and then became the winner of the Breeders Futurity at Lexington when Betty Beall from Edward R Bradleys Idle Hour Stock Farm Stable was disqualified for a foul foulDonges Donges ran a smashing race behind Blossom Time from the Bradley stable in the second half of the Pimlico Futurity and altogether proved himself one of the truly good young thoroughbreds of last year It is probable that Donges will make his appearance before the running of the Kentucky Derby and give a line on his threeyearold possibilities possibilitiesAnother Another of the Kentucky stables that has at least one threeyearold that shapes up as the possible champion of the 1923 threeyear olds is that of Montfort Jones His filly Oui Oui a daughter of Sir John Johnson and Parisian by Ogden and bred by Mr Jones went into winter retirement with three stake races at a mile to her credit These were the Queen City Handicap at Latonia the Walden Stakes at Pimlico and the Endurance Handi ¬ cap at Bowie BowieThese These races told eloquently of her ability to travel as far as twoyearolds are asked to race and suggested that the threeyearold dis ¬ tances will be well within her powers powersIn In the Queen City Handicap among others Oui Oui took the measure of were Donges Bright Tomorrow Betty Beall Cherry Pie and Rialto In the Walden Handicap among those that finished back of her were General Thatcher Solisa Bright Tomorrow Vigil How Fair My Own and others that had raced their way into a considerable degree of importance Her Endurance Handicap victory was scored over such as Vigil Moonraker Fly by Day Osprey and the like likeKay Kay Spence has reported that the filly has wintered exceedingly well at the Jones farm in Virginia and it is intended to have her ready for an early beginning this year yearThere There were two fine fillies heading the list of winners of the Idle Hour Stock Farm rac ¬ ing establishment of Edward R Bradley These were Blossom Time and Betty Beall Each is a daughter of North Star III and each was bred by Mr Bradley BradleyOf Of the pair Blossom Time seems the choice and while her only race that gave her the front position in the stable was the second half of the Pimlico Futurity she demonstrated in that victory that she is both fast and game She closely followed the early pacemaker and came on through the stretch to easily hold as good a colt as Donges safe at the end She was under equal weight with the Ward colt and others that were back of her at the finish were Little Celt How Fair Oui Oui General Thatcher Best Love Dunlin and Bluemont BluemontMr Mr Bradley had an unusual share of bad luck through the early racing season and it pursued his horses through the Saratoga meet ¬ ing It was there that Bright Tomorrow was disqualified after finishing first Then again at Lexington in the fall Betty Beall after being first home in the Breeders Futurity was disqualified and the big money went to Donges But the stable has two fast fillies in Blossom Time and Betty Beall while many good judges expect Bright Tomorrow another North Star III to take a place among the best threeyearolds of this year
