Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 4 1903 I Racing at New Orleans and Oakland A valuable addition to the Ziegler Stable located at Patricks Highland Farm at Lex ¬ ington has been made by the purchase of the threeyearcld colt Jack Young The price said to have been paid to G C Young for the son of Lamplighter Johnetta was 10000 i Jack Young raced exclusively at St Louis last year and was considered about the best two yearold that raced there He was first no less than eleven times winning among other races the Test Handicap one mile in 141 in which he defeated the good filly Geheim niss He also won at one mile and seventy yards in 1 45 the first mile of which was run in 1 40 and one and onesixteenth miles in 1 47 In all his races he finished fast and as he seemed especially fond of a mile or more Mr Ziegler unquestionably has in Jack Young material for a cracking threeyearold Right and True all that the name implies implieswas was A C McCaffertys brown colt by Tristan EJerdie today at New Orleans in the thethird third race which was almost as much of an anattraction attraction as the Premier Stakes He outran outranthe the best sprinters quartered at the track True Truei i he was carrying only the feather of 93 pounds poundsbut but with Shoo Fiy Scorpio Mrs Frank Fos ¬ ter Bummer II Tenderloin and Matt Spencer ready to run he needed all the help the han dicapper could give him Right and True was off well in motion and jockey McCafferty hustled him along all the way and he was never headed Mrs Frank Foster lacked her usual speed but easily held on to finish sec ¬ ond Scorpio had a rough race being inter ¬ fered with continually and also was much hin ¬ dered at the start He was crowded back at the first turn the leaders gaming an advantage there which he could never overcome The Premier Stakes That was the attrac ¬ tion that drew a big attendance to the Fair Grounds Dr Loder from Durnell Herz Stable May Holladay owned by H T Grif ¬ fin Petunia R W Waldens brilliant two yearold filly Dick Bernard the hope of E E Smathers and another Walden entry Transmigration answered the bugle call for the final test Dick Bernard and Dr Loder were coupled in the betting being trained by C E Durnell Dr Loder might just as well have been kept in the stable for all the figure he cut in the actual racing Dick Bernard won but that does not tell how easily he did win At the rise of the barrier he jumped into the lead and opened up such a big gap in the first quarter that jockey Helge son was forced to pull him up or he would have won by a hundred lengths or more The distance was fiveeighths of a mile and the track being muddy the record for this dis ¬ tance would surely have been broken for Dick Bernard had wings on his feet today Such brilliant speed as he showed is seldom witnessed at a winter track and the turfmen at the Fair Grounds are predicting great things for this son of Florist Petunia was easily best of the others and May Holladay took the small end of the purse
