J K L ROSS STRONG HAND HANDMontreal Montreal Turfman Has Five For ¬ midable Candidates for the Val ¬ uable Conroth Handicap TIJUANA RACETRACK Mexico March 6 The victory of Rebuke at Tijuana recently in an owners handicap at a mile would appear to indicate that Henry McDamel will be ready to make a strong bid for the winners end of the 30000 Coffroth Handi ¬ cap for Commander J K L Ross of Mon ¬ treal This big stake will be run March 25 Rebuke trimmed Serapis Ten Buttons Sun nyland and John S Reardon easily in this handicap a dasli of a mile and forty yards on a slow track The ease of this victory confirmed the form he had shown early in January when he whipped Halu and Black Betty in a race of one mile which distance he covered in 1 40 and a fraction on a fast track Rebuke is a much improved horse horseAnd And the son of Dick Finnell and The Scold is only one of five horses entered in Com ¬ mander Ross name in the Coffroth The others are Spanish Maize Muttikins Bastille and Feylance Rebuke is in the Ross stable this winter as a result of a selling race tilt between McDaniel and Sam Louis at Laurel Park last fall Louis who plays no favorites in the selling race war he had taken Rebuke from Thomas Monahan president of the CubaAmerican Jockey Club after a selling race at Saratoga went after a couple of the Ross platers in Maryland McDaniel retaliated by taking Rebuke which was running in both selling races and handicaps and running well too He beat Fairway and Bunga Buck in one Laurel Park race and Captain Alcock the winner of the Bowie and Pimlico Cups in another In Cuba last win ¬ ter he won the 15000 Derby under the Mon ¬ ahan silks and scored at Havre de Grace in April in a handicap Rebuke appears to like a long distance and to be indifferent to track conditions Possibly he is a little bet ¬ ter in muddy going than in any other sort sortSPANISH SPANISH 3IAIK IX F01UL F01ULTrainer Trainer McDaniel on Sunday succeeded in winning with the big handsome rangy Spanish Maize for the first time this meeting Spanish Maize was indeed slightly lame after a race in January However the Ham ¬ ilton Derby winner of last summer is coming on handsomely and the connections of the Ross stable are confident he will give a first rate account of himself not only in the Cof ¬ froth Handicap but in the Tijuana Cup as well Spanish Maize is a big striding long ¬ distance runner weighs all of 1150 pounds now and is still growing He is splendidly underpinned His lameness of last month I was due to the bruising of a foot Continued ou twelfth page J K L ROSS STRONG HAND Continued from first page Feylance is in more forward condition than Spanish Maize or indeed any other of the Ross aggregation He earned the ex ¬ penses incident to the shipping of the Ross stable from Maryland when he won his first purse late in December He defeated Aba dane Dr Johnson John S Reardon and some other horses in a dash of threequarters threequartersFeylance Feylance is a New York bred colt a son of Assagai he a son of the renowned long ¬ distance runner Spearmint winner of the Epsom Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris and St Fey He came from Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sunbriar Court Stud at Bingham ton and cost Commander Ross 0000 at the auction block His mother is a daughter of SL Frusquin of the family of the celebrated Hourless On both sides of his house Fey ¬ lance is bred for longdistance running He ought to go on himself In his winnirig race of January he ran from behind Krewer Serapis Ten Buttons and Motor Cop He had plenty to spare at the finish and was going away s sMcDaniel McDaniel would just as soon J B McKce had not brought the formidable Bon Homme this way from New Orleans He concedes the merit of the son of Sweep and Sue Smith and realizes that training Bon Homme for a gallop at a speed of one mile and a quar ¬ j ter toward the end of next month will be difficult But he is not without hope Bon Homme will have to give weight to Fey ¬ lance Rebuke and Spanish Maize in the Coffroth Handicap Weight brings all horses together
