BARGAINS AT HEWITT SALE J W McClelland Considered to Have Made Good Investment Metric Held Cheap at SS000 Crowd So Large Largethat that Bidders Fail to Gel the theAuctioneers Auctioneers Ear LEXIXGTOX Ky March 24 The high prices realized at the Hewitt sale were favor ¬ ably commented on by horsemen and breeders here The fact that the purchasers are gene ally well satisfied with what they got fcr their money is an indication that there is nothing fictitious about the values and this is emphasized by the statements of several good trainers to the effect that there were a number of bargains among the horses In training trainingThe The biggest bargain is considered to be Banter the threeyearold son of Huon and Hazzaza which James W McClelland got for 4500 His half brother Washington by Ballot wluch John S Ward bought for 600 also is considered to have been well bought There was a rumor to the effect that this big fouryearold had bowed a ten ¬ don last year but trainer John I Smith ana his stable force all say that he merely struck himself and that they thought best to let up on his training He is apparently as sound as any hcrse at the track but on account of his size and the amount of training he requires it is not to be expected that he will appear in the early racing this year yearMetric Metric the brown colt by Short Grass Star Maid which Mose Goldblatt bought has a slight enlargement of one knee but in the opinion of a number of horsemen that will not give him trouble and he is counted well bought for the sum cf 8GOO there being many present who were of the opinion that he would bring at least 12000 This horse won from good company at threequarters in 112 last spring and this is taken as an indication of his class In Memoriam and Alice Blue Gown having been second and third to him He is counted a stayer and is eligible to the Kentucky Derby Latonia Derby and Latonia Championship Stakes There are some who say he will win more races this year than any other horse sold Thursday evening eveningOVERLOOK OVERLOOK 1000 UA1SK UA1SKThe The crowd at the sale was so immense and so spread over the hallway of the big Tatter sails barn that it was difficult for many to attract the attention of auctioneer George A Bain and likewise it was difficult for him to sec all of his audience because he was literally surrounded by people Advocate the first horse up brought 3000 he having been knocked down to Dr W E Coover who j Continued from first page was bidding for the account of John F Schcrr but an instant after the fall of the thei i hammer the voice of big Frank Hudson of the oil producing firm of Hudson Collijis boomed forth a bid of 6000 He had been trying to raise his finger to Colonel Bains height but being at his side and well away from the stand he was not observed Colonel Bain however smiled and said Sorry sir too late by a watchs tick Hope none of us miss heaven as narrowly as I missed that thousand dollars dollarsPerhaps Perhaps if Hudson had secured Advocate he would not now have been the owner of Startle which good fouryearold filly Joe S Hawkins bought for him for ir000 after having outbid both J O ICeene and A B Hancock HancockThe The second horse sold was Autocrat which went to Ernest It Little one of the best traders and luckiest men who ever moved into Lexington He came out of the moun ¬ tains several years ago and has parlayed 1 flock of geese into several Blue Grass farms i He loves horses but until a short while ago i he owned only trotters He had made thou i sands of dollars by buying trotters that no body else seemed to want and developing j them and he very likely has an idea that he can do the same stunt on the running turf since he has purchased a number of cheap mares here and there and Thursday night gave only 210 for Autocrat Seme one had bid 200 and Little said ten Ten thousand inquired Colonel Bain Xo ten dollars responded Little Say Ernie youre not at a trotting horse sale said Bain but he was not able to get a raise and had to knock the son of Aulcain off to Little LittleS2000 S2000 AXIJ JJOX OF CIGAIIS CIGAIISTouett Touett Heed bought Easter Bells for a quartet of local business men who for the present prefer to remain unknown He bought this colts dam Mission Bell for him ¬ self and when Broom Dance and White Clover were knocked down to him he was acting for William K Caskey who has half a dozen horses in training at the Kentucky Association track Caskey let former Senator Joseph W Bailey have White Clover the morning after the sale for a good box of cigars over the 2000 he paid for her Sena ¬ tor Bailey departed for his home at Dallas Friday evening eveningDixie Dixie Smith the brown colt by George Smith Coy Maid looks very much like his sire and is counted a bargain among the two yearolds Jouett Reed bought him for M Elliott who was not present but who resides at Washington and is a friend of Preston Biirch The colt was placed in Jack Bakers string to be trained for his Kentucky engage ¬ ments The yearling brown colt by Helmet Badinage also was bought for Elliotts ac ¬ count and he is to remain here at the William Preston farm farm12d 12d ward Cebrian said that he went to the sale merely to look on but when he saw the yearling daughter of Ballot and Star Jlaid going for a low price he cut in and got her for 1400 Then he bought her granddam Coy Maid heavily in foal to Xorth Star HI for 1900 and later in the evening had the pleasure of seeing Star Maid sold for 11100 It is generally considered that Cebrian got a couple of bargains in the light of the strong demand there was for Star Maid which goes to the establishment of Robert J Walden in Maryland
