Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 25 1903 Racing at Washington Oakland and Little The report that Grey Friar is coughing is incorrect Several of the Frank Hitchcock horses have been coughing slightly and some few arc still coughing but Grey Friar was one of the first to recover and has not coughed for several days He has been in perfect health since the early part of the week The ailment that has visited the stable has thus far proved only trifling triflingFlush Flush of Gold which has been badly off form lately at Oakland displayed that dazzling speed in winning the daily handicap that has made her a highly respected handicap horse The dis ¬ tance was one and onesixteenth miles and she outpaced and outstayed her opponents in a mcst convincing manner winning as far off as her rider elected Leader and Position were more fancied in the betting than Flush of Gold the form followers remembering her bad races of late Grail was the runnerup and Horton was third thirdT T Burns may cross the Atlantic to ride an English Derby candidate Burns expressed himself to this effect at Washington several days ago He did not say which candidate it may be or give a hint in that direction He simply stated that he expected to go Pre ¬ sumably Skeets Martin who has had an ex ¬ tended experience in England would be Mr Whitneys choice for the most promising of his Derby aspirants but as that gentlemans Derby possibilities may be regarded as an un ¬ known quantity for the present at least it is not improbable that he may be better equipped with eligible thrceyecrolds on the other side of the water than with jockeys to ride them themAfter After having his horse Illyria disqualified for first money in the opening race at Benning Father Bill Daly sent Carroll D to the post in the fourth race and he was returned the winner The Daly horses are in good condi ¬ tion at the present time and it is Dalys avowed intention to capture at least one purse a day Illyria was disqualified for crowding Ahola and Blue and Orange on the turn into the homestretch Blue and Orange should have won this race but was weakly ridden Ahola was also given a bad ride her jockey letting go of her in the stretch allowing her to swerve all over the track but she managed to finish a head in front of Blue and Orange and was given the race after Illyria was disqualified disqualifiedCaptain Captain S S Brown and trainer Peter Wim mer are confident in the belief that the four yearold Hyphen will come around again this year and win some of the rich stakes for which he is engaged When the son of Himyar was shipped from Lexington to Louisville the other day to await the arrival there of Cap ¬ tain Browns big stable from Mobile he ap ¬ peared to be perfectly sound and in splendid condition after spending the winter in the most comfortable quarters that money could pro ¬ vide Captain Brown has always held the opinion that Hyphen is an exceptionally good horse and when the colt defeated Major Dain gerfield in the Brighton Derby last summer he was pronounced by many one of the best threeyearolds of the year but he went wrong and was quickly thrown out of training Cap ¬ tain Brown will probably allow Hyphen to make his first start just before the Brighton Handicap for which he will be especially pre ¬ pared
