F I I i t i ] l Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of April 5, 1903 Sunday. No racing. Jockeys Nash Turner and Jerry Ranch, who are riding in France for W. K. Vanderbilt, are living in great style in Paris, as they have a cottage between them and a number of servants. This, it is said, has been furnished by Mr. Vanderbilt. Perry Belmonts River Pirate is attracting the attention of all horsemen at Sheepshead Bay. The three-year old son of Pirate of Penzance- Harebell, under Frank McCabcs careful handling, has developed into a grand colt and is taking his preliminary work in the most satisfactory manner. Among his im portant engagements is the Withers Stakes, to be run at Morris Park; the Broadway Stakes at Gravesend. and the Brighton Han dicap. Few who have seen him this spring will b? surprised if he does not be among the first flight of this years horses. Frank Bryan, who was one of the stewards that ruled off W. H. Fizer and his horses at the New Orleans meeting, denies that Fizer was told that he might expect clemency by April 8. as reported from Memphis. "The rul ing in the Fizer case was unconditional." says Mr. Bryan. At the time the ruling was made Mr. Fizer produced affidavits showing that four of the horses in the stable were purchased with meney furnished by Mrs. Fizer. He asked that these horses be ieinstated. so that they might be raced or disposed of satisfactorily. This has probably given rise to the rumor of his reinstatement.
