Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events ot April 19, 1903 Sunday, no racing. A. Forbes arrived at Hawthorne from California with the horses Sam Fullen and Beau Ormonde, which will be raced on the Chicago tracks this summer. Maurice McKnight, who has been starter Dwyers assistant for a long time, and his brother James, who was employed to help on the starting machine, severed their connections with starter Dwyer last Friday. Betting en the American Derby in the future book made by James OLeary, is reported to be heavier at this time than ever before in the history of the big race at this season of the year. A New York bettor sent ,000 against 2,000; Irish Lad. 5,000 to 00, from New York, and another bet on Hcrmis in the Brooklyn, 2,000 to ,500, also came from New York. At a meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club the actions of the stewards of the Washington Jockey Club in denying the privileges of the track to trainer W. H. Barrett was approved and all tracks in the East hereafter will refuse to allow Barrett to enter the paddock. Barrett was charged with making an offer to jockey J. Jones to put up a poor ride on the horse True Blue in a recent race at Benning. but he pleaded as an excuse that he was under the influence of liquor at the time and did not know what he was talking about. Jockey Miles, in the employ of "Father Bill Daly, who was suspended by the Benning stewards for a bad ride on Carrol D., will stay on the ground indefinitely, which means that he is in for a long spell of idleness. W. S. Vosburgh was appointed official stewards to represent the Jockey Club at the Queens County Jockey Club and at the Metropolitan Jockey Clubs spring meetings.
