IMPORTANT FOREIGN RACES 1 ♦ Tesio Filly, Duccia de Buoninseg- ! na, in Easy Victory at Rome. ♦ Other Events Recently Decided on Italian Itace Tracks — Hungarian-Bred Fonr- lear-Oid Takes lremio Melton. ♦ l The Italian racing season for 1023 opened , February 11 at the Parioli course, Home, and has been attended by gTeat interest | and success thus far, with a number of im- ■ portant events decided. One of the principal of these was the : Premio ltegina Klena, an annual fixture . named in honor of Italys queen and worth . 30,000 lire, pre-war value ,000. but present value about ,500. It is for three-year-old fillies and, after the Italian Oaks, the leading stake for the age and sex. Contested March 18, it was won by F. Tesios bay filly Duccia de Buoninsegna, by Bridge of Karn son of Cyllene and Santa Brigida, by St. Simon, out of Dutch Mary, by William the Third ; granddam the famous mare Pretty Polly, by Gallinule. She defeated four others easily by two lengths, running a mile in 1 :42, ridden by F. Kegoli, and carrying 123 pounds. The winner was bred in Ireland by Major Giles Loder. ITALIAN "GRAND NATIONAL." The Steeplechase Nazionale, the Italian equivalent of the Knglish Grand National, was run March 1, and won by tommendatore G. Borenzinis Kayoshk, a six-year-old bay gelding by Sea Sick — Heresy, ridden by J. Herold and carrying 147 Vi pounds. The field was small, only three starting. The distance, about two miles, was run in 3:55. The value of the stake was 12,000 lire. The Optional Handicap of 20.000 lire, for three-year-olds, was run February 18 and won by the Bellotta Stables Gratis, a bay colt by Harry of Hereford brother of Swynford — Celine, ridden by J. Takacs. under the light impost of 108 pounds. The distance, about seven-eighths of a mile, was run in 1 :33. Kight started. The Gran Corsa di Siepi, of 15.000 lire, another big jumping event, was run February 22 and won by Cavaliere G. Coccios Espana. beating eight others, including Kayoshk. Espana, a four-year-old filly by Areonte — Klsa. was ridden by E. Evans at 132 pounds and ran about two miles in 3 :47. ELLERAS GOOD VICTORY. The Premio Municipio di Roma, of 20,000 lire, was run February 25 and won by G. de Montels five-year-old bay mare, Ellera, by Icy Wind son of 1-aveno and Cauld Blast, by St. Frusquin — Eagerly, by Eager; next dam Queen of Manoa, by Bendigo. She was ridden by H. Louillon at 123 pounds and ran about a mile and three-quarters in 2 :29. Ellera was bred in Czecho-Slovakia by Sig-nora Marie Baltazzi. The Premio Meiton. of 20.000 lire, was run March 4 and won by the Bellotta Stables Alexandroshene, bay colt, four, by Dagor son of Flying Fox — Alpenveilchen, by Royal Lancer, ridden by L. Varga at 132 pounds, lie running about three-quarters in 1:15. The winner was bred in Hungary. RAPIDO SHOWS SPEED. The lremio Parioli, of 50,000 lire, one of the leading events for three-year-olds, was run March 11 and won by the Marchese R. Talons bay colt. Rapido, by Signorino, ltays leading sire, he by Best Man — Signorina, by St. Simon ; Rapidos dam being Roella, by Lally. she out of liugiadi, by Melanion ; next dam Rose The, by Melton. Rapido, ridden by U. Gabrielli at 127 M pounds, ran about one mile in 1 :45. beating five others. At Nice, on the French Riviera, the principal event of the spring meeting, the Grand Prix de Nice, was run March 18. This race, for a purse of 100.000 francs, is for all ages. over a course of 2.200 meters, or about a mile and three-quarters. There were eight starters and the favorite, Jean Lieuxs Harpo-crate, a five-year-old bay horse, by St. Ange III. he by Son o Mine, son of Isonomy from Hush, by St. Serg, won easily by two lengths. He carried top weight, 145 pounds, and was ridden by M. Allemand. The American representative in this race, A. K. Ma-combers Pantgruel, ridden by ONeill, was unplaced.
