ENCHANTMENT INJURED ON WAY TO L ATOM A - OUT OF THE KENTUCKY SPECIAL Crack Three-Year-Old Meets With Serious Mishap En Route From Maryland to Kentucky Large and Wonderful Field for the 0,000 Prize Despite Absence of H.P.Whitney Star LATONIA, Ky., Oct 4. Harry Payne Whitneys crack three-year-old Enchantment, which has been looming on tho horizon of late as one of the best three-year-olds in this country, was an arrival here today in company of his stable companion Rocket, but will not be a starter in the 0,000 Kentucky Special, for which his mission here was expressly his purpose. He met with a serious mishap enroute that precludes his start in the big race Saturday and probably for some time. Trainer James Rowe, who came with the horses, notified Mr. Whitney of the colts injury this afternoon and also instructed that jockey McAtee, who was to have ridden Enchantment, refrain from making the trip here. "It is a regrettable incident," said Mr. Rowe in discussing the injury. "Enchantment either became cast or kicked out a glass window in the car and cut himself so severely that he will be unable to start in the Kentucky Special. The full extent of the injury will probably not be determined until tomorrow. I considered the colt in prime condition and he would have given a good account of himself in the running of the big race." Mr. Rowe will remain here until after the running of the Kentucky Special and then go to Lexington to look over some of the yearlings owned by Harry Payne Whitney. The absence of Enchantment, while a keen disappointment to many, will in no wise detract from the race, for the galaxy of stars that will strive for the big prize will include the cream of the thoroughbreds in training. With the approach of the day set for tho running of the race comes gradual clarification of the probable ones that will answer the bugle call. A canvass among the owners shows the list an imposing one in quality. By gradual elimination of the doubtful ones, a fairly good line is offered and it indicates that probably not more than seventeen will comprise the field. The revised list of probable starters, their owners and the jockeys who will have mounts follows : Ilorse. Wt. Rider. Owner. "W-iiskaway ..119 M. Garner 0. W. Clark Vigil. 107 B. Marinelli. .W. J. Ilolman With the arrival of todays Easterners, it brings the contenders from that section up to seven, with the J. S. Cosden stable still to be heard from. The newcomers include Knobbie, which will carry the Sinclair colors, and A. C. Bostwicks Shuffle Along and Spot Cash. Those already on the racing ground hero include Vigil, Cherry Pie, Untidy and Frigate. These contenders from the Atlantic seaboard will give that section of the country formidable representation and will mark tho largest satrting list supplied by the Easterners in any valuable stake decided in Kentucky in many years. D. J. Leary came in charge of Knobbie and he made it known that Zev would be a starter here in tlie rich Latonia Championship, that will have its decision on the closing day of the meeting Nov. 3. It had been intended to send Little Chief also to start in the Kentucky Special, but an impression that he wjauld take up a five-pound penalty over his allotted weight of 12 1 pounds as a result of his victory Saturday caused him to be left in the East. Spot Cash and Shuffle Along came in charge of Ben Holmes, agent for A. C. Bost- " wick. Lawrence J. Waterbury telegraphed Matt J. Winn today that he would be here Saturday with a party of friends and that Mrs. Payne Whitney would be accompanied by six friends to view the big race. Other notable easterners have signified their intention of coming to witness the big fixture. Trainer Thomas Healey gave Vigil an easy gallop of a mile and a quarter Wednesday afternoon and he went the distance impressively in 2:0S. Shuffle Along and Spot Cash were also given gallops this morning. The former went three-quarters in 1:15ts and his stable-mate, seven-eighths in 1 :303. Best Pal went a mile in 1:126.
