MUMTAZ MAHAL DEFEATED Beaten by Half Length by Arcade in Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempt on Park. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. LONDON, England, Oct 12. Prince Aga Khans 5,000 Mumtaz Mahal sustained her first defeat in the Imperial Produce Stakes at Kempton Park this afternoon, when she was beaten by A de Rothschilds Arcade, a son of Tracery and Doro. Sir Hedworth Meuxs Tilphossa was third. Rain had turned the course into a quagmire.. Eight horses started in the Imperial Produce Stakes and Mumtaz Mahal, on the strength of her unbroken string of victories, was made a prohibitive favorite at 2 to 9. Arcade was quoted at 100 to 9 and Tilphossa was at 20 to 1. There was nothing fluky about the defeat of the daughter of The Tetrarch. As usual, she began quickly and rushed away at a great pace. When it appeared that she had tho race safe in the last furlongs she tired and Childs brought Arcade up with a well-timed rush to win by a half length. Tilphossa was not close enough to threaten the gray filly for second place, finishing third two lengths behind Mumtaz Mahal. It has come to be almost an axiom that a gray horse hates wet and soft going and Mumtaz Mahal is apparently no exception. Arcade cost his present owner 5,000 as a yearling in 1922.
