OUTSIDER BEATS EPINARD Lord Coventrys Verdict. Triumphs Over French Crack in the Famous Cambridgeshire Stakes. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. NEWMARKET, Eng., Oct. 31. Lord Coventrys Verdict, three-year-old bay daughter of Shogun and Finale, a "half breed" by the canons of the English stud book, Avas up in the last hundred yards to take the historic Cambridgeshire Handicap from the French crack, Epinard, at the Newmarket course this afternoon. G. Hardys Dumas Avas third. Bright sunshine and a good track made racing conditions ideal. An enormous crowd turned out for the last big classic of the English racing season. Twenty-three horses faced the starter. Interest centered on the French colt, Epinard, which, since ho won the SteAvards Cup at Goodwood, has been highly rated by the English experts. The "Wertheimer crack Avas backed into favoritism although he Avas assigned the top impost of 128 pounds. HaAvkins took advantage of Epinards early speed to rush him into the lead at the rise of the barrier and the son of Badajoz maintained his advantage until the last hundred yards of the mile and an eighth course. Then Beary brought Verdict up Avith a strong challenge and Avore the leader doAvn to Avin, going away, by a neck. Epinard saAed second place by a length from Dumas, AAhile Pharos and Legality Avcre close behind in fourth and fifth places respectively. Verdict carried 110 pounds and Dumas, another three-year-old, Avas in Avith the feather of 91 pounds, which included a fiAfe pound penalty. Pharos carried 119, Legality 111, and Haprenden, a four-year-old, which finished sixth carried 107. Roman Bacheler, a six-year-old, under 122 pounds finished seAerith, and Re-echo, a four-year-old, Avhich Avon the eA-ent last year, was eighth under 121. The race was run in 1:52. The defeat of Epinard was a great blow to his owner, Pierre Wertheimer, who stood to Avin something- like 00,000 if his colt had been victorious. Wertheimer some months ago made a Avager of ,000 on A. K. Ma-combers Rose Prince to win the Cesare-witch at 30 to 1, the Avinnings to go on Epinard in the Cambridgeshire at 6 to 1. Rose Prince AAon the Cesarewitch and Wertheimer consequently had 50,000 on Epinard in todays race.
