Thirty Leading Trainers of 1923 The honor of saddling the largest number of winners during the racing of 1923 fell to C. B. Irwin, the Cheyenne, Wyo., turfman, who races throughout the entire year and for the mcst part confines his turf activities to the far West. He made a remarkable record last year in sending 147 winners to the post, the largest in any one year in the history of the American turf. His stable won 04,054, which is also quite a feat, considering that the greater portion of that sum was earned in overnight races without any of the outstanding valuable stake races of the year falling to his lot to help swell the total. Henry McDaniel, who .presides over the destines of the Commander J. K. L. Ross stable, is second on the list in respect to the number of winners saddled during the year 1923. He sent ninety winners to the post. Then follows S. C. Hildreth with 75, W. R. Padgett with C7 and A. Swenke with 60. In the matter of money won by the horses saddled by the various trainers S. C. Hildreth, of course, tops the list with the worlds record sum of 92,124. H. McDaniel is second on this list also, with William Garth, T. J. Healey, James Rowe, A. J. Joyner, M. Hirsch, C. B. Irwin, W. Buford and J. W. Healy each with winnings in excess of 00,000 to his credit. Here are two interesting tabulations, the first showing in order the trainers who saddled the largest number of winners during 1923, the second the leaders in respect to money won by the winning horses they saddled: Trainer.
