HERZ DISPERSAL SALE . i Disappointing, Thirty-One Horses Bringing Only 1,500. -- Stallion Short Grass to Remount Service for 50 Farm Is Withdrawn From Sale. 1 LEXINGTON, Ky., Feb. 2J. The Short Grass Stud Farm of 137 acres, one cf the very best-equipped breeding farms in the Blue Grass region, was withdrawn by Emil Herz from sale this afternoon when George A. Bain was unable to gain a bid beyond 11 per acre. This last bid was made by Lucas B. Combs. The previous bid of 10 per acres was made by Dan W. Scott, who . had raised John E. Maddens bid of 05 per acre. "I have given my horses away," said Herz, "but Im not going to give this farm away. I will sell it privately for a fair price, but I will not stand for any more of this, which looks to me like a Kentucky conspiracy. You all know what I gave for this farm and you all know that Phil T. Chinn last year gave 50 per acre for a farm that had on it only an old house anU on which he has since put many improvements. The farm is withdrawn from sale." During the hour before noon the horses were sold and the result was a great disappointment to Herz. The stallion Short Grass went to the Remount Service of the United States for 50. The ten yearlings by Short Grass, average 15 and the twenty-one mares brought 3,700, an average of ,090, the total being ,500. The top price of the sale was ,000. for Triple Crown, half sister to Zev, and her filly foal by The Finn, sire oi Zev. They went to Joe Marrone, who got Home Star for ,000, Common Law for ,4u0 and Christo-phine for ,900. J. W. Parrish got Marys Belle and her Day colt by Pennant for ,100, the second highest price, and W. E. Caskey got a real bai-gain when Queens Lock, heavy in foal to The Finn, was knocked down to him for .G00. Another bargain was Comsora and her bay colt by North Star III., secured by A. J. Joyner for George D. Widener, at ,700, and John A. Payne bought well when he got the colt out of Comsora by Short Grass for ,500. He also got a bargain in the yearling by Short Grass from Intrigue for 00. The sale was very largely attended, the weather being bright and warm.
