April 10.— Clarence Turner, the Biviera Stables contract rider last year, failed to obtain a license for the coming stason at a meeting of the Jockey Club Stewards Thursday afternoon. His application for a jockey license was laid on the table. Two applicants for trainers licenses. George W. Spear and B. Smart were denied papers. As usual no reasons for the action of the stewards in these cases were made public. The reason for Turners failure to obtain a license is understood to have been his ride on Houri in a race at Aqueduct last year. Nothing could be ascertained regarding Spear and Smart. A gr at number of licenses were granted by the stewards to other jockeys and trainers. Among other routine business the steward* confirmed F. B. Hitchcocks appointment of a. H. Morris to act as deputy steward in his place during his absence abroad. August Belmont, F. K. Sturgis. EL K. Knapp, John ft. Cowdin, .It soph R. Davis, Joseph B. Widener and William Woodward were present. A. H. Morris joined the meeting after his appoint- ment as deputy steward had been confirmed. The application of EL D. Curley Brown, for permission to change the name of the Tracery stallion, John Paul Jones, to Tracer, was granted. George W. Gall lias been appointed to the position of racing secretary of the Fmpire Pacing Association, succeeding Victor E. Sehaumburg, who is now* connected with the Westchester and Saratoga Associations.
