EPINARD IN FINE FORM NEW YORK. N*. Y., May 17.— The manner in which Epinard won the Prix dArgenteuil •t Longchamps on Sunday last from as good a horse as Almaviva. giving Lis competitors twenty pounds, gives assurance that the French champion is in fine fettle and getting a gradual preparation for his American campaign. Last Sundays test was at ■even-eighths. Lest it should bo surmised that Epinard beat an ordinary horse in Almaviva it is well to state that this same son of La Farina, ridden by Stephen Donoghue, vanquished at SL Cloud on April 20 in the Prix le Roi Solieil, a band that included Kefalin, winner of the Grand Frix de Paris in 1922 and second to Ramus in the French Derby the same year. That Kpinard will be meeting an even better horse tomorrow at St. Clould In the Lincolnshire Handicap winner, Sir Galahad III., is the contention of the French critics, but the absence of any wagering on the Cohn representative despite the concession of eleven pounds in his favor reflects the belief that Epinard will be returned the winner of the match.
