Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 21, 1904 Racing at Morris Park, Hawthorne, Latonia, Kansas City, Toronto, Union and Delmar Parks at St. Louis. Tanya took the National Stallion Stakes and Beldame the Ladies Handicap today at Morris Park. The National was worth 0,975 to Mr. Duryea, owner of the winner. Newton Bennington was enriched by the sum of ,870 by his grand fillys victory. N. Dyments first-time starter, Sapper, won the Kings Plate, the feature race of the opening day at Toronto. Nimble Dick and another first time starter, War Whoop, were second and third respectively. English Lad, the chestnut son of Requital and English Lady, owned by Fred Cook, the St. Louis bookmaker, trained by William Phillips, ridden by jockey Nicol, with sufficient lead beneath his saddle to make up the weight of 122 pounds and favored by the public in the betting, earned a clean cut victory in the fifth running of the revived Chicago Derby, which was the feature of the first-day card at the Hawthorne track today. The horse which finished second was Prince Silverwings. a bay son of The Commoner, from the stable of Talbot Bros., who come from Paris, Ky. The third horse was Moharib, a brown colt by Esher — Reflection, which, under the handling of Joe Hawkins, won the Kansas City Derby for John W. Schorr, the Memphis brewer. The fourth was Flower King, bracketless bay colt by Florist, from the stable of the local firm, M. H. Tichenor and Co.
