OMBRAGE WINS BY INCHES Triumphs in Thorncliffe Main Race After Thrilling Finish. Royal Pearl Scores for Kenton Stable Canadian-Bred Race to Caledon Clansman Snccccds. TORONTO, Ont, Sept. 16. There was no outstanding feature on Tuesdays program at Thorncliffe Park. The card consisted of six claiming races and one allowance dash for juvenile maidens. The large fields, however, made up for lack cf a feature race. The track was exceedingly fast and the speculation brisk. The best field paraded for the fourth race, at one mile. The finish of this race was one of the closest ever witnessed on a Toronto track, the result being in doubt until the official placing was displayed. Ombrage won it. Hermidale finished second and Wood Lady was third. From a good start Ombrage was first to show in front, with Hermidale in closest attendance. This pair made all the running. Ombrage, favored with the inside position, saved ground cn all the turns, while Hermidale was forced to race on the outside. At the half-mile post Lang made his move with Hermidale, but Ombrage stood him off. Coming into the stretch both horses were lapped and in a stirring finish Burns managed to keep Ombrages nose in front cf Hermidale at the end. Wood Lady, the one to take down the third portion of the purse, raced in third position all the way and easily held the others safe. The Kenton Stable scored its first victory of the meeting when Rcyal Pearl was an easy winner over his stablemate, Pictin, in the opening dash. Miss Bezetto finished third. A large field of Canadian-breds paraded to the post in the second race on the program, a dash of five-eighths. The winner turned up in Caledon, which won this race last year. Caledon secured clear passage next to the inside rail and, saving ground, stocd off challenges from Lady Heart and Leading Light and had a half length to spare at the finish. After many unsuccessful attempts, Mrs. A. E. Alexandras Clansman finally maae good when he was a rather handy winner of the third race. Clansman wore Whirlwind down in the stretch and won going away by a length and a half. Whirlwind held on more courageously than usual. Mill Gate, the ono. to take the third portion of the purse, was away slowly and closed an immense gap in the final stages. The fifth race furnished an upset when Dr. Mayer was returned the winner in a thrilling stretch drive from Mrs. A. E. Alexandras Servitor.
