SPECTACULAR CONTEST Graeme Gets Up in Final Stride to Win Latonia Feature. Beats Bedford, Beginners Luck and Dare Say by Inches After Thrilling, Exciting Finish. LATONIA, Ky., Oct 3. In a finish so close that it had the big crowd thrilled and highly excited, Graeme got up in the final stride to land the feature, the Times-Star Handicap at one mile, from Bedford with Beginners Luck inches away and Dare Say following. The four leaders were fighting it out in strenuous fashion all during the last eighth and the winner under a rousing ride won by virtue of his inner rail position. Bedford was also going strongly at the end and he just managed to outstay Beginners Luck when that filly swerved out a trifle in the last twenty yards. Dare Say cracked in the last sixteenth. The task imposed on her was too great. She had gotten away tardily and was in last place considerable distance away from the leaders when the first turn was negotiated. Stutts was forced to ride her wide and she steadily gained on the leaders and at the stretch turn appeared to be the winner, but after battling valiantly she began tiring. Graemes showing was a good one and a game one. McDermott rode him in his best energetic style and he paved much ground during the last quarter. The mile in 1 :37 was a highly creditable one and showed Graeme at his best for he was conceeding the others considerable weight. Bedford was a pronounced favorite. CLOSE FINISHES FEATURE Another big crowd including some of the advance guard to witness the International Special on October 11, witnessed some of the best racing that has been on tap during the present meeting. In a number of races the finishes wero so close that it required the judges placing to determine the winners, in some instances the finishes were not confined between the first two. The folly of jockeys swinging wide in the stretch was made patent in several of the races, for usually the victim succumbed by the closest kind of a margin. This was strikingly illustrated in the case of Kitty Pat, Columbia and Bedford, each beaten by a matter of inches in the last stride. J. N. Camden made it a double for the afternoon. In addition to Graemes success, Rothermel contributed a purse when she was given the decision over her stable companion, Kitty Pat, in the sixth race. Rother-mels success was made possible by Kitty Pat going wide all during the last eighth end enabling Garner to take Rothermel through a clear path next the inner rail. Rothermels. margin was of the narrowest variety while Kitty Pat also had to struggle hard to outstay Dangerillo, which was contending sharply for the entire way with the leading pair. FOUR FOR BRADLEYS TOXEY. Bradleys Toney, which figured yesterday in a sensational victory, was again in tlie limelight this afternoon when he scored again in thrilling fashion. On this occasion however, it was a lucky victory with Mc-Dermotts lack of judgment on Columbia the cause of the laters failure by a matter of inches. Bradleys Toney would not have lost any prestige had he been beaten for he carried 120 pounds, a seventeen-pound penalty for his victory yesterday and he fought it out gamely for the entire way and actually outstayed Columbia in the last few strides. Where Columbia lost the race was when McDermott came out from an inner post position to range alongside of Snooksie Bradley which was making a threatening spurt in the stretch. This enabled Bradleys Toney to come up on the inside. Had McDermott kept Columbia where he was next the inner rail, Bradleys Toney would not have succeeded in coming around to win. Columbia was an overwhelming favorite and his defeat was a stunner to the big crowd. It marked the fourth straight victory for Bradleys Toney in less than a week. . " Another pronounced choice that suffered defeat and gave the players a big jolt was Slicker in the third race. This one seemed to have the race at his mercy, but again faulty riding proved the undoing. D. Mergler was the offender on this occasion and his blunder consisted of subjecting Slicker to an exhaustive effort in trying to dispose of Beautiful Addie. The diminutive Hay took advantage of the suicidal tactics employed with the leading pair and kept his mount, Peter Maloney, under restraint until just about reaching the stretch, where he came around Slicker and riding in confident fashion, brought Peter Maloney home a neck in front. Beautiful Addie finished third. The opener brought eight fairly good Continued on sixteenth page. SPECTACULARCONTEST Continued from first page sprinting platers to the post with Spats and Naughty Nisba held in most Tegard. Betting wisdom was correct in this instance, for Spats Avon after leading throughout, with Naughty Nisba following and Bemorecareful In third place. The maiden filly race brought out the usual dozen starters and on this occasion Outcast proved easily the best and she won handily. Garner got her away forwardly I and, showing fine speed, she moved into the lead promptly and was well in hand for the entire way. Speckled Beauty proved the surprise by racing forwardly ,all the way, and just managing to outstay Sari for second place. Sari began slowly and had to work a rough trip, but came steadily in the stretch and was going fastest at the end. The closing dash was another tight fit, with Plus Ultra winner in the last stride by a nose from Lily M., with Wida in third place. There was speed galore in the race, with Pure Dee, Finday and Minus dominating the running for the first three-quarters. They began fading in the stretch and ultimately brought up far back. Minus was claimed by M. Shapoff -at a cost of ?3,000. Jockey Everett Haynes, who has been riding Epinard in his races, was an arrival during the day.
