; QUATRAIN IN PUBLIC TRIAL ♦ Favorite for Kentucky Derby Works a Mile at Full Speed -r-» • - , , Single Foot Goes Derby Route in 2:06 3-5 in Sparkling Performance — Son of John Delights His Admirers by an Impressive Move ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 13. — Prior to the opening race Quatrain, present favorite for the Derby, was worked a mile at top speed and cantered an additional eighth. He ran well throughout and showed a good performance. There was some disappointment that he did not cover the mile in faster time, but owner Johnson expressed satisfaction with the trial. The time was 1:41%, the fractions being as follows: Quarter, :24%; half, :49; three-quarters, 1:15; mile, 1:41%, and cantered out the mile and an eighth in 1:55%. J. E. Griffiths Single Foot and Bud Fishers Swope. two Kentucky Derby candidates that arrived at Churchill Downs from the East a couple of days ago, were given their first pretentious trials this morning, going the full Derby distance of a mile and a quarter. From a time standpoint the showing of Single Foot stood out. The son of Wrack and Virginia L., under the direction of trainer Harry Rites and with jockey Willie Ohert up, went the distance in 2:06%. which time was only surpassed this spring by Captain Hals sensational mile and a quarter in 2:05% the day previously. The fractions were :23%, :48%, 1:14. 1:39% and 2:06%. The colt came out of his work in good condition. Swopes fractional time was :26, :51%, 1:18%, 1:46% and 2:11%. The big colt displayed no distress when pulled up. Son of John, which of late has come in for considerable attention as a possible Derby contender, was worked a mile and a quarter after the third race and he made his supporters jubilant by turning in the fast time of 2:07% for the distance. He was well under restraint for most of the way, the fractions of the move being as follows: Quarter. :25: half mile. :49%: three-quarters, 1 15; mile, 1:40%, and mile and a quarter in 2:07%. 1 The hading jockeys of the country will have mounts in the Derby. Most of these are already on the scene, while the remainder will be here by Thursday. Yesterdays arrivals included : 15. Brcuning, who will have the mount on Quatrain, present favorite for the Derby I.. McDermott reached here Wednesday. He has been engaged by Hal Price Headley. to ride Almadel. Both McAtee and Ivan Parke are coming with the horses that James Rove will bring for the Derby. Jockey Earl Sande, who is under contract to the J. K Widener stable, stated that Hamadan, the Widener Derby eligible, was not returned to Kentucky for the big race, because of a recent illness. Sande has arranged to leave Louisville Saturday night for Belmont Park, where he will report to trainer Ham Keene. R. L, Jerrys Voltaic, in charge of trainer George Odom. was the only Derby eligible to arrive from the Fast. Wednesday. The colt shipped in fine condition.
