FINALE AT PIMLICO » Spring Season of Racing in Maryland Comes to an End. ♦ General Thatcher Wins Spring Handicap, While Heavily Backed Wise Counsellor Fails Badly. » BALTIMORE, Md., May 13.— With the running of todays program at Pimlico, the spring season of racing in Maryland came to a close. Bowie, Havre de Grace and Pimlico have enjoyed the best meetings in the history of these three clubs, both as regards attendance and amount of money handled in the machines. There was a good crowd out this afternoon to witness the running of the afternoons feature, the Spring Handicap, a dash of a mile and a sixteenth, which brought out a good field which included among others Wise Counsellor. On the strength of his recent victory and the glamor attached to him through winning one of the International match races last fall. Wise Counsellor was the publics choice and heavily backed. He. however, proved a rank disappointment and was soundly beaten, finishing last in a field of six. The winner was General Thatcher, which beat Thomasine by a nose. Wise Counsellor showed his usual brilliant speed in the early stages, setting a fast pace and racing under restraint to the top of the stretch, where he collapsed and dropped out of the picture. The surprise of the race was the good showing of Thomasine and the weak riding of the diminutive Brown. The latter sent Thomasine up with a rush on the outside in the run down the back stretch and at the half mile post was a head in front of Wise Counsellor. It appeared as if Parke was sitting still on Wise Counsellor and simply jollying Brown along. Thomasine, however, hung oa like a tiger anil simply would not he shaken off. This probably nettled Wise Counsellor, for at the top of the home stretch he simply quit and Thomasine drew away and for a time looked a certain winner. When the pinch came Brown was unable to help his mount any and General Thatcher, under strong riding, just managed to get up in the last stride. The stake carried a value of ,500 and the winners portion was ,070. ORISADEU TO THE FOKE. The Glen Riddle Farm two-year-olds, which have been a bit slow coming to hand, are r lunding into winning form. On Monday. Friars Carse showed a smashing good performance, and this afternoon. Crusader came back with a good race, when he came from the rear, in the run through the home stretch, to beat the heavily backed flaffs-man by a head. There was a hot tip out on Gaffsman. The colt has shown keen speed in his trials and it looked a ease of laying the money down and picking it up. Thats what his backers thought, c.affsman ran a good race, going to the front with a rush, rounding the far turn and drawing away at the top of the home stretch. In the last sixteenth, he began to tire and it was only in the final strides that Crusad»r caught and passed him. Zepp lin was third. There was a lot of contention in the fourth race from the rise of the harrier to the finish. The winner was Storm King. Off none UM Well, he showed a great flash of ■peed the first eighth, where lie moved up on the outride and at the half-mile post he was right then with tile lead. rs. Four .f them wire racing head and head, with Roland having a slight advantage, while Scorcher. Scotch Broom and Storm King were daaa by. with all four jockeys booting and slushing in an effort to shake one aaother off Storm King came through on the inside entering the home stretch, while Poland arid S orcher went a little wide. At the- eighth post Bcorcher had a slight adraataga and it looked as if he would win. Storm King ease again, however, and. finishing straight and true, just managed to get up in time to beat Scorcher. Poland was third, another neck away. EASY FOR BUI.I.SEYE.
