Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of June 10, 1905 Racing at Gravesend, Latonia, Buffalo, Hamilton, Ont. ; Union Park and Fair Grounds at St. Louis. Oxford, running in the name and colors of James McLaughlin, won the second renewal of the Buffalo Derby at Kenilworth Park this afternoon. The race was run over a deep and slow track. He shouldered top weight, 126 pounds, and beat the favorite, Tongorder, three parts of a length in a driving finish, which lasted the length of the stretch. Oxford was second choice in the betting and was ridden by jockey Odom. To Odom is due much of the credit for the victory of the colt. He displayed good judgment in avoiding the fast early pace set by Tongorder and not until half the journey had been run did he make his move. The Brooklyn Derby and the Tremont Stakes were the features of a splendid card at Gravesend this afternoon. The Derby was a tame affair. The favorite, Cairngorn, won, but ran a dull race. Everyone apparently had waiting orders and allowed Von Tromp to run into a long lead. It appeared for a time on the last turn that he could get. home in a fluke affair, but he lacked the ability. This years field of four was the most moderate seen in years. The twentieth renewal of the St. Louis Derby brought a crowd of 15,000 to the Fair Grounds. Uncle Charley was the winner after one of the most interesting races ever witnessed in these parts. He was unfortunate at the start, but kept at his task and, making up the lost ground gradually, took the lead in the stretch and came home under wraps.
