TOBOGGAN TO WORTHMORE Carries 125 Pounds to Impressive Victory in Fast Time. ♦ Silver Fox Finishes Serond and Noah Third i — Fall In Steeplechase Results In Injuries to Jockey J. Russell. • NEW YORK, N. T., June 9.— Worthmore. which races for the Everglades Stable of John S. Ward and top weight in the Toboggan Handicap, was winner of the old sprinting feature at Belmont Park today. He carried 125 pounds and ran the three-quarters , in 1 :11 under a good ride by Albert Johnson and added J8.700 to his winnings. The Ran-cocas Stables three-year-old Silver Fox was only a head back and two lengths further back II. P. Whitneys Noah outstayed the Log Cabin Stables Lucky Play by a head for third. It was a delightful day for the sport and a good crowd witnessed the races. The program was an interesting one and, barring an accident in the steeplechase, there was nothing to mar It. In the steeeplechase J. Russell fell with Golden Cup at the last fence and was removed to the hospital suffering from a broken collar bone, injuries to the head and possibly more serious hurts. Little time was lost at the post in the Toboggan Handicap and the start was good. Noah, beginning from the inside position, was first to show, hut Johnson sent Worth-more right after him and Serenader was in . third place, while Pique was also in a forward position. Happy Thoughts was away j well, but she was in rather close quarters in , the early racing and did not have a chance I to extend herself Johnson was content to I have Worthmore follow Noah and they were still lapped on each other when the turn for home was reached. There Schuttinger took Happy Thoughts to the outside and she was moved up in a manner that was decidedly threatening, but racing on the outside was a handicap and before the final eighth she | tired. I Fator chose the inside with Silver Fox and he was also coming with a rush that might have landed him the winner had he not been forced to go to the outside of Worthmore right at the end. In the meantime Worth-more had raced Noah into defeat, hut Silver j Fox was coming fast and would have won in another stride. Lucky Play also finished I with a rush and he would have displaced Noah for third in a few more yards. It was a handicap that was a decided compliment j j to Walter S. Vosburgh in his assignment of the weights. Happy Thoughts came out of , the race badly lamed and it may be some Continued on sixteenth pace. TOBOGGAN TO WORTHMORE Continued from first pace. t _.. before she is seen under silks again. It was a five furlongs dash for two-year-olds of the plater division that was the oj ening race and S. C. Hildreth saddled the winner when he sent Gareth to the post for the Itancocas Stable. Gareth began well and raced straight and. true down the middle of the course. He led practically all the way and had a length and a half to spare at the end. H. P. Whitneys Cartoon saved second place and Walter J. Salmons Wormwold was third over George D. Wideners Hillside. The placed horses raced forwardedly most of the way and Wormwold at the stand was going well, but he hung under punishment. John E. Maddens Conserve was going well and in a contending position when he swerved so sharply to the outside that Ijegere had to take him up to avoid an accident. The race run by Cartoon was an exceptionally good one, for he began slowly and rushed through his field in impressive fashion. There were six went to the post for the short course steeplechase and Joseph E. Wideners Lizard, under a well-judged ride I by "Dolly" Byers, was winner over Bayard ] Warrens Ipsal and Itichard Pending* Frank Furst saved third from L. H. Congers Isis. High Court, from the Queen City Stable, was the only other to finish when J. B. Macombers Golden Cup fell with J. Russell at the last fence. Isis was the one to cut out the pace for a turn of the field and J. Rowan, who had the mount, was utterly unable to pull her back to her company. Byers was rating Lizard back of this pace and the others were in fairly close order, with Frank Furst last of the six. At the water there was some closing up back of the mare, but she was still full of run at the bottom of tne field, while Lizard was under wraps back of her and it was apparent he would go to her when asked. Then, at the first jump in the back field. High Court made a bad landing that almost unseated H. Williams. Midway of the run through the back field Byers moved up with Lizard and at the same time unseated Williams. Upsal improved his position and was racing strongly. It was plain that Isis was tiring from her early effort and she was beaten three fences from the finish. At the upper end of the field Smoot made a determined bid with Ipsal. but Byers had saved something for this challenge and he held to his lead with Lizard. Haynes was moving up rapidly with Frank Furst on the outside and Russell was rushing Golden Cup to the last jump when he went down. Safely over the last jump Lizard readily out-finished Upsal, which in turn held Frank Furst safe. After the finish it was discovered that the saddle girth on Isis had slipped back free of the saddle, though it probably had no effect on the result. J A. Coburns Yoshimi was much the best of "the platers which came together in the third race, but thanks to Scobie he only won I by a narn.w margin over J. J. Faheys Wish I Win and L. Clarks North Breeze only saved third by a head from Soviet. It was a good start and while Yoshimi did not begin as rapidly as the others he found room on the inside to steal through early and once in front he made all the pace. At the head of the stretch, for some strange reason, Scobie took Yoshimi a bit wide and looked back to see just where the others were in tho running. This stupid move enabled Wish I Win to move up rapidly on the Inside and at the i same time North Breeze and Soviet began to close with good courag k. Yoshimi was good I enough to slick it out and win, but through I lie last furlong Scobie was of scant assistance. CutltOOt from the Oak Ridge Stable ridden by Larl Sande, was much the lust of Hm two-year-olds which, start, d in the fi.e-eighths, straight, of tile fifth. It was the Log Cabin Stable** Croai Fin which raced into second place and R. l. Qerryi Baraaa tlcaa saved third. Edward Arlingtons Lupine, ridden by Jockey .1. Maihcn. was winner of tho final race of the afternoon. She just managtd to outstay the fast-finishing Maser Crump, whia h ramo with a rush on tlic outside while Yuui.;; April was Uiird
