EDISTO THEJVINNER Easily Accounts for the 0,000 Added Philadelphia Handicap. • Club Steak Suffers Her First Defeat Because of Slow Start — Double for J. H. Stotler. HAVRE DE GRACE, ML, April 21. The Canadian-owned Edisto beat a band of the best handicap horses here this afternoon when he won the Philadelphia Handicap with 0,000 added, at a mile and a sixteenth. Edisto was ridden by H. , Barnes and made his opponents look cheap. Off well, he was rushed to the front and on the back stretch drew away into .1 long lead which he retained throughout, winning at the end by seven lengths from Cudgcller. The latter was a head in front of the favorite Joy Smoke. Then came Wilderness, another head away. There was a nine minutes delay at the post and when the barrier was released the field left to a good start. After they had gone half a mile the result looked a foregone conclusion as Edisto was out in front with a long lead and apparently cantering. Wilder-M ss closed an immense gap and finished with a rush. An immense gathering turned out to wit-tk ss the sport, the crowd being the largest of the meeting. J. H. Stotler saddled two of the afternoons winners in Laddie Buck arid Rock Man. CANTER IN WORKOUT. Between the running of the first and second races the Derby colt Canter was hrought out and worked a mile in 1:44. He went around two water carts and finished in the ■kiddie of the track. Club Steak, which beat some fair youngsters in her first two starts, met her first defeat when she was beaten by a head by Ked Rocket in the second race. Club Steaks defeat was due to a slow start. She appeared to have been bumped when the start came and before Chalmers got her going she was five or six lengths back of the leaders. Entering the home stretch she moved up fast and at the sixteenth-post looked a certain winner. In the final drive, however, she tired a hit and Red Rocket, under a rousing finish, outlasted her. Smith got the winner off well and trailed off the fast early pace until entering the home stretch, where he moved up strongly. Turner sent Best Friend into a long lead in the early stages, but in the stretch run the colt tired. Rock Man made a run-away of the Fleet-Wood Handicap. He outran his rivals from the start and. after passing the half mile post, drew away into a commanding lead. Coltiletti took him in hand at the end and he had a lengths margin over Mr. Pepp at the finish. Ducks and Drakes II., the English sprinter, was a factor to the top of the home Stretch and when he tired Walls cased him up. The winner worked out the mile in 1 :41%. ROISINC FINISH in opfm:k. A rousing finisli came with the running of the first race when Laddie Buck, Red IVn-nant and Gymkhana fought it out through the home stretch and finished in a close bunch. Laddie Buck was the winner by a Beck, while Red Pennant beat Gymkhana by the smallest of margins. Dizzy Blonde bounded to the front when the Start came :,!nl set a fast pace. She drew away in the early stages, but after passing the half mile OOOt was joined by Gymkhana. This pair raced head and head into the home stretch, where Dizzy Blonde began to weaken. Bad-die Buck was lucky in slipping through next the inside rail, while Rod Pennant lost ground by making a wide turn into the homo stretch and finished on the outside of the leaders. Mungo was very fractious at the barrier and when the start came he refused to join his field. Punjab lost a tough race when he was beaten by a head and a neck by Rapture nnil Marche Militaire in the third race. off slowly and badly outrun the first half mile, Punjab stageil a great Stretch run. but just failed to make it. At the finish lie was gaining on the leaders with a rush. Marche Militaire started out to make a runaway of it. Outrunning his rivals to the first turn, he drew into with a commanding lead on the back Stretch. Rounding the turn Into the home stretch. Rapture moved up stoutly and wearing the pacemaker down, outgamed him in the final strides. Another close finish came with the running of the sixth race when Golden Spire came from behind in the stretch run to get up in the closing stride to beat Redstone by 1 a nose. Gilded Basel, a two year old in the lien Riddle Stable, was jumped on just above the hoof on the off fore leg in her race yesterday and came back to the stable with an ugly looking gash.
