LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 21.— While it came as no great surprise, yet the official announcement by trainer F. 10. Kraft, of the crack colt Carlaris, that he would not be prepared for his Derby engagement, produced a mild shock to both horsemen and fans alike. The condition of the colts leg. injured by a kick on the right hock joint, administered by his own left foot, refuses to respond to treatment as well as his trainer and Dr. Henry Harthill. the veterinary In charge of his case since he arrived here from Tijuana expected and trainer Kraft said this morning he would stop the colt from further e-xcrcise and give the injured member every chance to heal. The son of Phakcrfs — Carnival has been walking around the big barn in which he is stabled for the past two days, but no attempt has been made to take him out on the track. Due to the fact that Carlaris was immediately installed the favorite in the winter books as soon as his arrival at Douglas Park was heralded to the public, trainer Kraft has endeavored to keep the colt in training so that his backers would get a run for their money in the Derby, but now it is certain that he will not face the harrier in the big event and his connections do not want any one to place wagers in the future books as under play or pay rules governing the wagers they would lose their money. With Carlaris out of the Derby. Pompey, W. R. Coes champion of 1925 will rule a strong favorite in the future books and- his recent trial at Belmont Park in which he ran a mile in 1 :4;!4.-, will have a tendency to make the public turn.ito Pompey. It is announced officially that trainer Karrick, of the Coe stable will have the bay son of Sun Briar-Cleopatra here several days before the running of the race and he will go to the post a big favorite for the Derby. The heavy track at Churchill Downs and slow going at Douglas Park precluded any attempt on the part of trainers and owners of Derby candidates having them indulge in anything but slow gallops and canters.
