| I NOCTURNAL WORKS A MILE ♦ ■ Shows Advanced Condition in Gallop at Churchill Downs. e Sandy Man and American Ron Seen Under Saddle— King Nadl Ready for the Colors — Other Training Gallop*. e LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 29.— Nocturnal, the black son of Eternal-Delco, owned by Hawkins and Ferguson, was the Derby candidate to show the best trial of the morning over a distance of ground at the Downs. Trainer-owner Hawkins instructed his exercise boy to let the colt run along between 1 :45 and 1 :46 and the lad rated him In the notch set according to his instructions, as the final time of the journey once around the course was accomplished in 1 :45- s. This is the first time that Hawkins has asked the colt to go a mile in much above a two minute clip, but from now on he will be expected to show some of the sensational speed he displayed hist year in his racing. The fractional time of the gallop was £4%, :50Vfc. 1:17 for the first three-quarters after the colt was not rushed to the finish. Hawkins declared Nocturnals move an excellent one both in the manner in which he accomplished the task and tho way his boy rated him, obeying his instructions to tho letter. The track was fast and weather conditions could not have been improved upon. Trainer Knapp. of the La Brae stable, gave the Derby colts Sandy Man and American Son short workouts, the former a half-mile in :48% and five-eighths in 1 :0 while the latter covered a half mile in :50. Kddie Hayward exercised both colts. Recollection galloped three-eighths in ::!7 in preparation for a good workout over a distance of ground tomorrow. ROSKBEC IX FORM. The Oaks candidates from the Edward Cebrian stable, Rosebec and Lakme turned a half mile for trainer deorge Brooks in :oi. Try Out, a two-year-old colt in this barn went three-eighths in :H6%. Flying thiof showed a like distance in :37. Captain Hal showed trainer Roscoe Cooso. three-quarters in 1:15 after going the first half mile in :48. J. J. Troxler sent King Nadi a mile in 1 :43%, the first three-quarters being covered in 1 :14V6. J. J. Ahern. owner of Black Crackle and EDefl Ahern, trained by L. II. Sewell, paid a visit to his barn this morning. He came over to Louisville for the day. He will leave for Chicago tonight, but will return for the Derby. W. C. Weant reports tho death of the colt recently born to the mare Kulah F. at Oak-dale Stud. The youngster died from inflama-tion of the bowels. Oeorge B. Mcintosh gelded two two-year-olds at Douglas Park yesterday. One was the property of H. C. Fisher and the other belonged to his trainer Alex Cordon. These juveniles were left behind when the Fisher and Cordon horses were shipped to Jamaica. He attended the mare Spindale. owned by tiieatt Brothers, of this city, which gave birth to a bay colt yesterday, by High Xoon. Dr. Mcintosh received a letter from trainer Henry McDaniel, of the J. K. L. Ross stable. w hich stated that Ponstick would be a starter in the Derby if he continued to train in as satisfactory manner and in the event that he did not he would campaign earlier on the Canadian circuit.
