also was a big surprise Draconis looked like the winner until the last eighth when Thrace ran him down to beat him to the finish by two lengths Patuxant took the short end of the stakes half a length farther back He beat James Butlers Charade by a neck neckDraconis Draconis in winning the Colorado Stakes two weeks ago ran the fastest race of the meeting for twoyearolds He sprinted the fiveeighths original overnight field only Captain Kettle was withdrawn trainer James Rowe evidently believing that Whiskery was for ¬ midable enough to run alone in the Harry Payne Whitney colors The Bclair Studs Sarmalion completed the field but like Whiskery he never was dangerous This pair followed the others virtually from the start startDRACOXIS DRACOXIS CHEAT SPEED SPEEDWhen When starter Mars Cassidy sent the field away it was to a good start Thrace began in front but the advantage was negligible Before the first sixteenth post was reached Draconis from the extreme outside position was in the van little early speed and was far back for the first quarter quarterDraconis Draconis appeared to be holding the vie too safe until the stretch was reached and Tlichards swung wide coming into it Thrace which had swung off Charade in the run around the turn saved much ground as he skinned the rail into the straightaway The Greentree colt bore down on Draconis and at the last eighth post they were locked Then Dracpnis suddenly began to tire and Thrace came away to win winCharade Charade met with misfortune when Barnes begarTdriving her as the last sixteenth post loomed up She swerved to the occured occuredThe The sport was witnessed by another bum ¬ per crowd All parts of the plant were thronged In the early afternoon the weather was clear but after the secondary feature was run the skies clouded and rain threat ¬ ened Just before and after the Excelsior it rained intermittently and the spectators were kept busy moving in and out of shelter shelterThere There were only five starters in the Ex ¬ celsior Hedgefence being an added starter It was one of the smallest fields that has ever competed in this fixture and it also lacked general quality The running pro ¬ duced little to enthuse about Turf Idbl had in his previous race which was at the same distance performed poorly being soundly beaten In the Excelsior he was a much improved horse Ho made a runaway of it taking a long lead early and maintaining it to the finish After the dash for the running postions going to tho clubhouse turn Turf Idol was five lengths in front Avhile Wilder nesa Avas leading Cherry pie by the same margin Back of the latter were Hedge fence and Max Hirschs King Solomons Seal SealIn In the run up the back stretch it was just a parade There were no changes In the running positions until the last eighth post As this was passed Cherry Pie caught the tiring Wilderness and dashed past him to finish four lengths back of Turf Idol and the same distance in front of the AVilson color bearer bearerSande Sande started the day by piloting J W Beans filly Olive Dexter to a hard earned victory over the Everglade Stables colt Black Agate on which Harry Richards had the mount Crimdiis was third in the field of six maiden twoyearold contestants The nice resulted as the majority of spectators expected but Sande had to use all his skill to bring it about aboutThe The result was between the first two all the way The filly and colt began in step slightly ahead of their rivals In the first eighth they were clear and when the quarter post was reached they were running head and head four lengths to the good Under punishment they remained lapped on each other to half way down the strctcSi whera Black Agate tired The filly drew away to win by two lengths ridden out Black Agate took second place by four lengths Crimdus was an easy third after Realization which had been running in that position swung wide coming into the stretch stretchLeatherwood Leatherwood suddenly came to life in the threequarters race for platers that was sec ¬ ond on the card and gave trainer Sammy Smith a double This result also was an ¬ ticipated although the expectations of vic ¬ tory were not warranted by the geldinga previous two races in which he was beaten off He was just cantering at the end win ¬ ning from Donnavideo by four lengths Bom ¬ bardier was third six lengths farther back There were nine starters it being the largest field of the day At the start Sliiraz quickly went to the front Ieatherwood started in the second division While Shiraz and Don ¬ navideo were disputing the lead Leather wood under P Fisher forced his way up As they turned out of the back stretch it looked as though Leatherwood bumped Shiraa in his drive to the front Shiraz dropped from the van to the ruck and finished far out of it itMeanwhile Meanwhile Leatherwood hooked up with Beach Maid but the filly did not long keep pace with the gelding She tired half way around the turn and Leatherwood drew away Donnavideo then took up the futile pursuit of the leader She made a game effort but could not get up Many expected that a foal would be claimed after the finish but BQ action was taken
