KING NADI IMPRESSES Decisively Defeats Crack Horses in Handicap at Louisville Gallops Additional Three eighths eighthsin in Preparation for Grainger GraingerMemorial Memorial Handicap LOUISVILLE Ky May 19 J J Troxlers King Nadi which ranked with the best in the threeyearold division last year made a hid for championship recognition in the handicap division by an impressive per ¬ formance in the threequarters mile Market Street Merchants Association Handicap which featured todays Churchill Downs program and brought to the post a band of cracks which included Lee O Cotner and Princess Doreen DoreenKing King Xadis victory was decisive He came away in the stretch to win under restraint and continued to work out an additional threeeighths as a final preparations for his expected start in the Grainger Memorial Handicap 10000 added which will be de ¬ cided next Saturday King Xadi ran the mile and an eighth in 153 the mile in 139 Iee O Cotner was favored in the race His preceding two victories over good fields brought him an extensive following His failure was complete He followed Arcady under restraint in the early stages and though he probably was hampered as a result of his inability to race in his full stride for the first half mile he could have come away in the stretch where he saved ground and had much racing room had be been good enough King Nadi moved up with a rush after the first quarter and and passed the pacemaker with ease when urged to do so Lee O Cotner was in danger of losing third place to Princess Doreen when the latter challenged an eighth out but the Audley Farm crack gave way something unusual for her herSILVER SILVER CUP TO WINNER WINNERThe The race carried a purse of 1800 and in addition the Market Street Merchants Asso ciation pesented a handsome cup to the winner and a prize to the winning jockey Threatening cold weather caused a slight decrease in attendance but a good crowd was in evidence Betting activities continued on a par with former days this week The sixth race which brought to the post some good sprinters resulted in the outstand ¬ ing upset of the afternoon when Panic won Panic was favored by a good start and he raced a close follower to In Bounds an ¬ other which had began well The pair fought it out in the stretch with Heupel on Panic proving best and winning in the final strides from In Bounds with Mayfair in third place Bareolo Malcolm B Jr and Starbeck were never strong factors Bareolo seemed to begin off stride and could never recover Malcolm B Jr was away slowly and Star beck was handicapped by a bad ride and some interference interferenceW W S Healons Golden Lynn grouped with others in the field in the opening race at six and a half furlongs won handily from Tale qua with Frederick Raphael following Gold ¬ en Lynns victory was unexpected and it was a lucky one considering that her rider had his foot forced from the stirrup He was unbal ¬ anced at the finish Talequa showed a win ¬ ning effort and closed an immense gap throush the stretch finishing much faster than the winner Frederick Raphael flat ¬ tered extensively by racing with the leaders but he began swerving out steadily in the lost eighth Sandalwood was another that showed a smart effort as he came from far l ack to finish close to the leaders leadersSlIKITED SlIKITED FINISH Fourteen twoyearolds started in the sec ¬ ond iace and it resulted in a spirited finish between Gold Mint and King Basil with Dr Streett in third place Gold Mint had acted fractiously at the post and was away slowly but displayed high speed and raced into lead ¬ ership in the first quarter He disposed of Dr Streett after a brief duel through the stretch but was challenged near the end by King Basil and just managed to outstay him King Basil from an outer post position had to race wide and closing a big gap but tired just a trifle in the last few strides Dr Streett though tiring held the others safe for third place placeThe The third race for a high grade of platers furnished a spectacular finish and an upset when Dusty Mary outstayed Fair Rowcna liy a nose Chittagong finished third with Pat Calhoun following Dusty Mary showed the most speed from the start but tired near the end and barely outstayed the fast finish ¬ ing Fair Rowena Cliittanong and Pat Calhoun absorbed most support in the race Chitta gong was too much for Benham in the early stages but came steadily in the stretch Kederis rode Pat Calhoun all over the track a tid that nicer shy wed a dull performance compared to his previous winning effors
