SANFORD FEATURE WINNER Rosedale Stables Colt Defeats Bou Chaib in Stirring Finish Knncocas Stable Colors First and Second SecondAVI AVI th Celidon and JTcdana In InSecond Second Race NEW YORK N T May 19 There was not much to the program offered by the Metropolitan Jockey Club today but some of the contests were decidedly interesting The weather was delightful except for a high wind that was blowing and the rain of Tuesday night had failed to affect the going it being fast fastThe The best race of the day was the Merrick Handicap a mile and seventy yards affair that brought together five ordinary ones It resulted in an excellent finish when Sun ford from the Rosedale Stable under a stretch drive by Fator beat home C It Fleischmanns Bou Chaib on which Sande had the mount This Bou Chaib is a five yearold French horse making his first start in this country and his race was one to suggest he will earn his way wayFrom From a good start Sande rushed Bou Chaib away and Fator at once went after him with Sanford with the result it was virtually a twohorse race all the way Through the back stretch Bou Chaib contin ¬ ued to show the way under a steadying restraint and Fator was content to rate Sanford along back of him Leaving the back stretch Fator moved up on the French horse but when Sande eased his restraint Bou Chaib drew away again and then Fator determined to delay his move and he eased Sanford up again againSwinging Swinging into the stretch Sanford again drew up on Bou Chaib and as he drew alongside a stirring battle was staged all the way home In the final drive Sanford showed a disposition to bear in and Fator had trouble pulling him off Bou Chaib but he kept him straight and at the end he was winner by half a length lengthSix Six lengths back of this pair was Iiune another French importation which saved third from Seventh Son with Opperman the only other starter last lastThe The first race was a fiveeighths dash for plater twoyearolds and it fell to X Loscal yos Avisack II when she easily led home T J Macks Captain Jack with Pop Bell up in time to take third place from Laska LaskaSande Sande had Captain Jack away fast and he at once opened up a long lead but Avisack II was in second place Under a hard ride by Fator she wore the colt down in the stretch where he quit badly to come on and win witli plenty of speed in reserve The others were more or less strung out and altogether it was not much of a field fieldSam Sam Hildreth made a sure thing of the threequarters mile second race when he named both Celidon and Nedana from the Rancocas Stable And they finished first and second with Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Green Dragon a distant third Continued on twelfth page SANFORD FEATURE WINNER Continued from first page Larry Waterburys Carloman was rushed into the lead from the start but Fator soon caught him with Nedana and was content to rate along after the French colt though it was apparent she could pass him at the first asking In the meantime Sande had moved up with Celidon and lie held the others safe safeBefore Before the stretch was readied Nedana had raced by Carloman and then it was apparent the Rancocas silks would be both first and second secondIn In the run through the stretch Celidon came through on the inside to beat his stable mate and Green Dragon as has been told outstayed the others Hildreth had declared to win with Celidon and that was the reason for his being ridden out by Sande to beat his stablemate stablemateThere There came a victory for Mrs A Swenkes Sheiman in the threequarters of the third race when he made a winning rush to beat Harry Marts Delhi Boy while W C Clancys Hulabaloo was third before Skit with Leath ¬ erwood still further back The surprise of the race was the showing of Leatherwood though excellent excuse could be found for him whon he was badly blocked when Sande attempted to come through on the inside in the stretch Hulabaloo was the one to set the pace with Sherman in second place Leatherwood was heading the others and Sande was waiting with him for a stretch dash dashSwinging Swinging into the stretch Sande made his move but Carter had made a short turn into the stretch and Leatherwood was so com ¬ pletely blocked that his chance was gone Through the final eighth Hullabaloo began to tire and there it was that first Sherman and then Delhi Boy passed him Sande took a chance with Leatherwood that would win eight times out of ten but in this particular dash there came no opportunity to find room on the inner rail railA A big field of cheap ones paraded to the post for the mile and seventy yards fifth race and E J Morrows Doughnut proved winner when he outstayed C Bergmans Play Hour while Mrs J D Missicks Costi an saved third from the fast finishing Val lette from the G C Denny Stable StableDoughnut Doughnut and Cork Elm set the early pace and next it was Play Hour that went into command Cork Elm as was expected dropped out of contention but Doughnut came again in the final eighth to be winner by a neck and Costigan finishing strongly was just a head further back backThe The best effort was shown by Vallette She began from an outside position and was blocked at the rise of the barrier Racing last in the back stretch she weaved her way through gallantly and was a close fourth at the finish With better racing luck she would surely have been the winner winnerThe The fiveeighths mile race for maiden two yearolds at the end of the program com ¬ pleted a double for the Rancocas Stable when Fator rode Sweepster home an easy winner Harry Payne Whitneys Afterglow readily saved second place and just in the last stride G W Lofts Oharusan passed Recreation to be third
