JOY SMOKES TORONTO CUP E P Whitneys Racer Wins Valu ¬ able Race in Spirited Finish Outlasts Mothers Son and Edlsto in Closely CloselyContested Contested and Thrilling Struggle Struggleat at Woodbine Park TORONTO Ont May 24 In a sinew straining finish which lasted from the top of the stretch Edward F Whitneys Joy Smoke was winner of the Toronto Cup at l the Woodbine this afternoon A neck separ ¬ ated i the winner from Mothers Son which j in turn beat Edisto by a nose for third place j It was a thrilling battle between the three v with Mothers Son gradually wearing the f first two down at the end Kings Ransom was withdrawn and Digit added The Sea ¬ g gram entry was heavily backed backedEdisto Edisto showing his usual brilliant burst of speed dashed to the front rounding the first t turn and drew away on the back stretch Digit was second and Joy Smoke third But well took the latter under slight restraint and not until well around the far turn did he make a move When called on Joy Smoke responding with energy moved up stoutly and entering the home stretch was on almost even terms with Edisto Both riders sat down in a desperate drive and both horses answered with rare gameness In ¬ side the eighth post Joy Smoke had the Sea ¬ gram horse beaten but in the last sixteenth another contender loomed up in Mothers j Son The latter was answering Romanellis J call with determination and from there to the j finish was gradually wearing the leaders down He just failed to make it The win ¬ i ners share of the stake was 8530 8530The The first section of the Bend Or Plate i 1 fell to Lampus Racing in the colors of the Riverside Stable and ridden by J D Mooney Lampus showed a good performance coming from behind rounding the far turn and win ¬ 1 ning in a mild drive by a length from Shang ¬ 1 hai In the early running Lord Renfrew went to the front and made the pace to the head of the stretch where he quit Mooney then sent Lampus to the front and he re ¬ 1 mained there the remainder of the way King of Fortune was tiring at the end When the start came Marial Barton was left at the post She was ridden by a stable lad named Stretton who messed her about the entire distance At the first turn Stretton steered his mount to the extreme outside of her rivals and kept her there the entire way She cov ¬ ered a lot more ground than any horse in the race but despite this handicap closed a good gap gapThe The Sewickly Stable finished first and third in the Woodbine Steeplechase This was a handicap over the two and a half miles course and the club added 7500 to the away by three lengths from Gun Boat The latter made a desperate attempt at the sixteenth jump where he took the lead only to tire at the end Carabinier ran coupled with Another Star the latter showing a great turn of speed and fencing in fearless fashion drew away into a long lead the first tnrn of the field but tired badly at the end Le Vigne male lost her rider at the last jump She was a keen factor to this point when she began to tire Peccant the other starter pulled up lame lameO O F Burkhart showed up a likely looking filly in the first race in Heartache by Hire aux Larmes Heart String Ridden by Chick Lang Heartache came fast entering the home stretch and fighting it out all the last eighth with Millenium outgamed the latter to win by a head There was a long delay at the post for which Millenium was principally responsible When the start fin ¬ ally came Courting was first away but she was unable to keep up the pace and Fair brother rushed Millenium to the front Enter ¬ ing the home stretch Heartache which had been shuffled back soon after the start moved up and finishing like a real race horse got up in the final stride Fly Hawk was third The latter was kicked on the hock while at the post He was on the out Bide of his rival until straightened out in the home stretch where he swerved over to the inside insideA A stirring finish came with the running of the fourth race a threequarters dash for Canadianbreds Gallant Greek from the Seagram Stable was a well backed favorite but the best he could do was to finish sec ¬ ond The winner turned up in Paddle which came from behind in the stretch run to beat the favorite by a neck in a driving fin ¬ ish Paddle was very fractious at the post and when the start finally came he left run ¬ ning beating the others away a length Wells took back and permitted Gallant Greek to go to the front and make the pace When the latter tired in the stretch run Paddle re ¬ sponded with splendid courage and wearing the Seagram gelding down got up in the last fifty yards and was going away at the end endGolden Golden Wanderer just lasted long enough to win the sixth when he beat Martha Roos liy a head The winner forced a fast pace from the start and raced the favorite Talla dega into defeat in the first half Entering the home stretch Golden Wanderer took command and in a driving finish just lasted long enouglu
