SUN FLAG BACK IN FORM Makes Auspicious and Successful Return to Races Nichavo Proves Easily Best in Freeport FreeportHandicap Handicap Sankari Makes It a Double Doublefor for Itancocas Stable and L Fator NEW YORK N Y May 24 It was more like late November than May at big Belmont Park for the Monday racing but with all the unseasonably cold weather there was a big crowd out and while it was a program that did not hold out a great deal of promise good sport resulted resultedThe The day was marked by the return of Gifford A Cochrans Sun Flag to winning form after a long absence from the turf and the victory of the Rancocas Stables Nichavo in the mile of the Freeport Handi ¬ cap framed for threeyearolds Then there was a steeplechase that saw old Courteous the winner winnerOnly Only five that had been named through the entry box for the Freeport appeared under silks and Nichavo simply played with his opponents to lead Marshall Fields Tall wood home by a wide margin and Fal de Saint Phalles Liane just beat James Butlers Hang On for third thirdFator Fator was particularly alert at the post with Nichavo and when he sent him off running he was soon clear of his opponents and just galloping along in hand Tallwood was racing in second place and back of him came Hang On Acrostic and Liane all in fairly close order orderBefore Before the stretch was reached Thurber had repeatedly roused Tallwood with the whip in a vain effort to catch the flying Nichavo but it was of no avail and he was still a length back of the son of Lucullite at the finish Then back of Tallwood it seemed that Hang On woudl surely save third when Liane came with a rush on the outside As Callahan drove the filly she came over on Hang On and it seemed to bother him and passing the finish Callahan was still straightening his mount up upThe The race run by Nichavo was a decided improvement over what he has been showing and it would seem now that he has earned his WednesdayGifford right to start in the Withers Wednesday Gifford A Cochrans Sun Flag after hav ¬ ing been away from the races so long as to almost be forgotten came back a truly good horse in the threequarters over the Widener Course which was the third offering With Earl Sande in the saddle he made a show of his company to win with ridiculous ease while Sabine from the Rancocas Stable saved second place in a spirited finish from George D Wideners Hardwood Sun Flag started well and Sande took him into com ¬ mand at once and it was Nida a stablemate of Sabine that attempted to go with him in the early racing That proved a thankless task for Sun Flag made the pace too stiff and he was soon out clear of his company and galloping straight and true down the middle of the course courseSabine Sabine had swerved so in the early racing but she worked her way up in game fashion Continued on sixteenth pagej SUN FLAG BACK IN FORM Continued from first page and Gnome Girl was showing prominently but all of them were far bacK of Sun Flag with the minor parts of the purse the only prizes left for them Sabine hung on well to take second place but she was doing her best to beat Hardwood which also raced well At the start of this race Deviner a starter from the Log Cabin Stud Stable bolted and un ¬ seated J Chalmers ChalmersThere There came a double for the Rancocas Stable silks and for L Fator when Sankari was an easy winner from Harry Payne Whitneys Bostonian in the fifth race This was a four and a half furlong dash for maiden twoyearolds and Sankari virtually led all the way Bostonian finished well and G D Wideners Evader in a close finish saved third from Pat McGee McGeeThe The winner is the same that in a false start at Jamaica a few days ago was rid ¬ den out the full distance Fator mistaking the false start for a break Sankari began running and Reformed the William Garth starter raced along not far away Bos ¬ tonian made his real bid threesixteenths from the finish and when he charged along it looked for all the world as though he would race over Sankari but Falor realized the danger for when he shook up his mount the danger was passed Right at the end both Evader and Pat McGee were going ex ¬ ceedingly well and it looked as if both would graduate longIt from the maiden ranks before long It was a big field of juveniles that came together in the four and a half furlongs of the opening race and it resulted in a great finish when Pop Bell Tipperary Mary and Victrix finished noses apart in the order named while half a length back of them came another close bunch bunchVictrix Victrix was the one to force most of the pace and an eighth from home she looked all over a winner but in that last eighth there was a general closing up as the field weakened weakenedBefore Before the running Captain Jack was gen ¬ erally looked upon as best of the company While he was away well he met with some early interference and he did not show any of the speed that has marked his other races racesTne Tne saddle on Fireside Tales the Mrs K E Hitt starter slipped during the running and she had to be caught when Callahan had trouble in pulling her up The upThe steeplechase of the day was framed for platers and was over the short course It proved easy for old Courteous which now races for C V B Cushman He was good enough to go into command before the first fence was reached and he never surrendered that lead to win with plenty to spare H W Maxwells Vox Populi II raced to the place and third was the portion of L Dominicks Burton If IfMrs Mrs F Ambrose Clarks Loch Ayr was eliminated when she unseated C Crawford at the third fence while the Brookmeade Stables Gravity II came down two fences from home with Charlie Mounter Fortu ¬ nately both riders escaped serious injury and walked from the field fieldCourteous Courteous as has been told was out in front and galloping strongly before the first fence was reached Coypoti the Joseph E Davis starter for a time was leading the others but went all to pieces after racing a mile and she blundered at her fences badly for the rest of the race raceMounter Mounter saved ground all the way with Gravity II and she was in a contending posi ¬ tion when she came down but at the same time Vox Populi II and Burton II were right with her Then in the run in from the last fence Vox Populi If bore out rather badly but he readily beat Burton II for the place
