Here and There on the Turf Victory of Draconis Black Marias Comeback Prospects for Withers Fainnount Meeting Plans By his victory in the Juvenile Stakes at Belniont Park Saturday Gifford A Cochrans Draconis pronounced himself at least one of the best twoyearolds of the year He won like a high class colt but it is a race that will make him take up a penalty that will be a severe handicap in some of his other engage ¬ ments This winning of an early spring stake race too often has been a handicap that pre ¬ vents the winner from carrying on through the racing season with the same colts that he boats taking the particular race raceLast Last year G D Wideners Galetian was the winner of the Juvenile Stakes and he did not go through the racing season with his early promise fulfilled That of course in the case of Galetian did not have to do with the penalties he incurred for he went amiss amissThen Then there was Swope winner of the Great American Stakes of 1924 and Navigator win ¬ ner of the same early race last year They were both required to give away weight to the best contenders to top honors practically right through the year and it is more than prob ¬ able that without this handicap incurred so early in the racing year they would both have earned a better racing reputation Some of the recent winners of the Juvenile Stakes that were unable to carry on with the best as that victory might suggest were Ar cady Peter King McKee Column and Elfin to say nothing of others further back in the long history of the race raceBut But looking at the other side of the picture Tryster was its winner as was Bonnie Mary Lucullite Hourless and Broomstick They surely went on through the racing season in spite of any penalties they incurred by winning the early race raceIn In Draconis Mr Cochran has a stoutly bred and a remarkably fast colt and if he can pick up the Juvenile Stakes penalty and go on through the racing with the same success that has already come his way he will belong right up among the best of the winners of the famous old race When W R Coes Black Maria galloped off with the Ladies Handicap at Belniont Park on Saturday she demonstrated pretty conclu ¬ sively that she had not run her race in the Pinilico Oaks in which she was beaten by both Rapture and Ingrid Of course there was every excuse for Rapture The Whitney filly had scant chance when the barrier rose by reason of her own unruly actions and she closed a big gap to finish third but Black Maria won with an ease that suggested the same result even had Rapture not been un ¬ fortunate fortunateBlack Black Maria was back on the track over which she had been trained and that was an advantage Then she was further advanced than when she was sent to Pimlico The sur ¬ face of the two tracks is entirely different and it is easy to understand why a horse should show altogether different form over the dif ¬ ferent courses coursesThat That was especially true of the running of the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby The colts that raced well in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico were soundly beaten in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs while those that did not show well in the Preakness Stakes developed unexpected form in the Derby Bagenbaggage and Rockmari4 which were second and third in the Kentucky Derby with no apparent excuse were badly beaten in the Preaknesa Stakes while Display and Blon din colts that were first and second in the Preakness Stakes were nowhere in the running of the Derby DerbyThus Thus it is entirely possible that the difference in the tracks may have had much to do with the improved form shown by Black Maria But the ease with which the daughter of Black Toney and Bird Loose won the Ladies Handicap on Saturday places her right up with the best of the threeyearold fillies and there is every reason to hope that she will go on through the year running back to that handicap rather than to the Pimlico Oaks The Withers Stakes is the next big three yearold race It is to be decided on Wednes ¬ day at Belniont Park and while Joseph E Wideners Haste did not show to his best advantage in the running of the Toboggan Handicap it is hoped that he will be one of the field that will go to the post for the mile race W R Coes Pompey has been galloping well since his defeat in the Kentucky Derby and if the two could bo brought together it would be a race of great interest interestThen Then there is Black Maria It is not known that trainer Karrick will ask the filly to meet colts but he sent her to the post in the Wood Stakes at Jamaica and after her victory in the Ladies Handicap she may be the stable choice for the Withers Stakes She has raced herself into the right rightSarmaticus Sarmaticus is probably only a sprinter but his victory in the Toboggan Handicap was one that suggested that a mile might be his distance He has a world of speed and George Odom has him in rarely good form Blondin Macaw and Color Sergeant are three of the 11 P Whitney eligibles and it may be that the recent race run by Samuel D Riddles Crusa ¬ der might have just about fitted him for the Withers Stakes Altogether there is promise in the 1926 re ¬ newal but the starters will be made through the entry box today and then it will be seen just what may be expected in the race raceSaturday Saturday will mark the opening of the meeting of the Fainnount Jockey Club at Collinsville 111 near St Louis And this promises to be one of the truly important meet ¬ ings of the year Elaborate preparation has been made for this new meeting and all is in readiness for the opening The Fairmount Jockey Club only came into being last year but the character of the racing that was offered and the generous patronage that was accorded the racing put the course firmly on the turf map at once onceWith With the success that attended the first meeting testifying to the popularity of the sport ambitious plans were mapped out for the following meeting which is to begin Satur ¬ day All of these plans have been carried out to the last detail and the manner in which horses have already been shipped to the track assures worthy racing for St Louis LouisThe The most ambitious offering is the Fair mount Derby with an added value of 25000 This is to be decided June 19 and many of the starters in the Kentucky Derby will have one more opportunity to race with Bubbling Over the sensational winner of the Churchill Downs feature Just now Bubbling Over is being made ready for the Latonia Derby but he will be a sure starter in the Fainnount Derby unless something unforeseen happens to him before the date of that race There are no more popular racing colors in all the broad land than those of the Sea ¬ gram Stable Thus the winning of the Kings Plate at Woodbine Park by Haplite was a tre ¬ mendously popular victory victoryThere There was no better or no more popular owner on the turf than the late Joseph E Seagram and it is fitting indeed tnat his sons are carryingon in a manner to maintain the p6piilaritybf those famous old colors
