BELDAME HANDICAP SPLIT Run in Two Divisions as the Fourth and Sixth Races Edith Cavell and Whatll I Do the Winners Pillotta Scores in a Thrilling ThrillingFinish Finish NEW YORK N Y June 1 After the big Memorial Day of sport at Belmont Park the Tuesday card was made up of overnight events but the card was a good one and the crowd was a good one The showers of the forenoon cleared off by race time and condi ¬ tions were excellent for the day dayFor For what was meant as the feature for tlie afternoon was the Heldame at three quarters over the Widener Course for fillies and mares and under handicap conditions This race was split onehalf being run as the fourth race and the other wound up the sport of the day dayThe The first half saw Walter M Jeffords Edith Cavell the well named daughter of Man o War and The Nurse winner from William Zieglers Gamble while the Rancocas Stables Sabine just beat Samuel D Riddles Taps for third This was only one of four races over the Widener Course so that with a steeplechase only one race was run over the main course This was a mile condition race raceIn In the first half of the Beldame Kditli Cuvell was opposed by Turf Light and Rag ¬ weed as well as the fillies already mentioned both Cinema and Martha Washington being withdrawn withdrawnLittle Little time was lost at the barrier and as it arose Edith Cavell and Sabine were the ones to go out in the lead Taps had began a bit slowly but the others were all close at hand and it was a fairly close bunch in the early racing Coltilletti had Edith Cavell well over in the middle of the course and she galloped straight and true and Sabine swerved considerably as she raced along in the pace paceAn An eighth out Edith Cavell had Sabine beaten and Coltilletti had only to hold her together to score by a couple of lengths Sabine was tiring and right at the end Gam ¬ ble by a rush on the iiKide was the one to outlast for second place placeTaps Taps had some ground to make up and she appeared to run in spots but she was running at the end to land a close fourth The others had cut little figure in the running runningThe The second half of the Beldame Handicap saw Mrs 1C E Hitts Whatll I Do winner from the Rancocas Stables Basquaise with Samuel D Riddles Corvette third Whatll I Do left running and had all the speed while Ethereal began slowly and had scant chance chanceIt It was a thrilling finish came out of the four and a half furlongs of the third race when Pillotta was just up in the last stride to nose out the Grcentree Stables Saxon with Harry Payne Whitneys Byrd a close third And in this race the deceptive angle at the finish of the Widener Course again Continued on sixteenth i BELDAME HANDICAP SPLIT Continued from first prise caused many in the stands and lawns to xlisagree with the placing and call Saxcn the winner winnerSaxon Saxon was the one to show the way in the early racing with Byrd racing close after him and until the last eighth was reached it look for all the world as though it would be strictly between the two colts But Pil lotta was closing with a great rush on the inside rail and in the last seventy yards he had entered into the argument Saxon had put Ilyrd away but Pillottas charge proved too much for him and he nodded his nose down in front in the last stride strideThere There was much complaint by many when it became known that Saxon had carried llll pounds instead of the 112 shown on the program The mistake was corrected on the notice board but only a small percentage of those present knew the colt was carrying Vcven pounds more than shown on the pro ¬ gram j Frederick Johnsons Athel a bay son of Atheling II and Occasion was winner or the opening four and a half furlong dash for plater juveniles To score he eighth There he began to tire and it was then that Athel under a vigorous ride gained on him It was a battle right to the end where Athel was up in time and was going away hough his margin of victory was cnly a head Xonite finished well to be a length and a half further back Two of the disappoint ¬ ments of the running were Captain Jack and Policeman Day In previous races Captain Jack has shown an abundance of spsed but it was mtesing in this contest Police ¬ man Day was not off any too well and he was never able to race into a contending position positionThe The steeplechase of the day was
