Here and There on the Turf Bubbling Overs Injury Latonia Derby Outlook Sarazen Dependable Again Black Marias Victory Right on the heels of an assurance from Ed ¬ ward R Bradley that the injury to Bubbling Over was a slight one comes the announcement that the great colt will not be a starter in the Latonia Derby When Mr Bradley gave as ¬ surance that Bubbling Over was not seriously indisposed the wish was father to the thought He doubtless honestly was of the opinion that his Kentucky Derby winner could lie trained without interruption but now he is to be out of racing for a time at least leastAnil Anil Mr Bradley is to be commended oji nc t delaying his announcement that the colt would not start in the Latonia Derby to be run next Saturday It affords the trainers of other eligibles for the big race an opportunity to make their plans for the race Many a trainer who would not think of sending a colt after the swift running son of North Star III and Beaming Bsauty is more than willing to have a try for the mile and a half race with him out of the way It would have been possible for the announcement of Bubbling Overs with ¬ drawal to be withheld until it would have been too late for these trainers to be on hand for the Saturday contest contestAny Any time an injury becomes a question of the tendons it is a serious matter Weak or injured tendons have permanently retired more horses from racing than any other ailment and with any least suspicion of the tendons going the horse must have immediate attention if lie is to be saved for racing Of course it is devoutly hoped that Bubbling Over is not bowed ami that the present injury of his tendons if any will respond to treatment but it may be some time before the great colt is again seen under colors But it is an ill wind that blows no good in the case of Bubbling Over for with the Bradley champion out of the Latonia Derby and possibly a doubtful starter in some of his other big engagements many a trainer will take heart and have a try for those stakes These same trainers would not think of run ¬ ning a good colt after Bubbling Over and take a chance of breaking its heart for no re ¬ ward but with him out of the way they have no fear of the others This should result in the Latonia Derby attracting a much larger and more evenly matched field than would be the case with Bubbling Over among the starters startersTwo Two of the easterners that have every right to try for the Latonia Derby are William Zicgler Jrs Espino and Samuel D Riddles Crusader and there are others but these stand out a bit by reason of the manner in which each raced in the running of the Withers Stakes which fell to Joseph E Wideners Haste HasteCrusader Crusader and Espino finished heads apart in the order named right at the heels of Mr Widcners colt and it was apparent that in another eighth at most they would both have beaten him home And that same Withers Stakes just about eliminated W R Coes Pom pey as a contender for first honors among the threeyearolds of the year He showed nothing in the race and has either gone off en ¬ tirely or is not within many pounds of the colt he was last year when he raced himself to the top of the heap heapBut But Mr Bradley is not without a sturdy representative in the Latonia Derby with Bag enbaggage winner of the Louisiana Derby and a good second to Bubbling Over in the running of the Kentucky Derby He is a rare stayer and is well qualified to race a mile and a half with the best of them Still another is Rhinock from Mrs Coxs Parkview Stable This colt gave a good account of himself in the Kentucky Derby when lie raced fourth and he is another that is favored by a long dis ¬ tance of ground groundWalter Walter J Salmon has both DisjJay Jiis Prcakness Stakes winner and Punjab winner of the Woodstock Plate at Woodbine Park in the Latonia Derby eligible list and to go back to the race run by H P Whitneys Blondin in the Preakness Stakes would give him an undoubted chance in the mile and a half of the Latonia race raceAltogether Altogether the withdrawal of Bubbling Over from the race Saturday should jnake for a larger field and a better contest Sarazen has been raced four times this year and has three victories to his credit so that it may be he has become dependable again His first race made him a winner at a mile and seventy yards at Havre de Grace That was followed by his one defeat when he was soundly beaten at the same track This race weakened cnfidence in the son of High Time and for that reason doubt was expressed of his fitness to win the 125000 Dixie Handicap at Pimlico But Sarazen took the lead in the Dixie Handicap and won all the way with Sun Pal the horse that won when he was beaten at Havre de Grace racing second secondHirsch Hirsch gave Sarazen a rest after that until he brought him out for the Metropolitan Han ¬ dicap at Belmont Park on Memorial Day and he was rewarded in having him come home again a winner winnerThat That Metropolitan Handicap victory was a sterling one when under 129 pounds he fol ¬ lowed the fast running Sun Flag until he hail put him away and then had enough in reserve to withstand the final rush of Senalado And it was a fast pace with the first quarter in 23 the half in 46f and the six furlongs in 1 12 over a track that was far from bring fast In fact a track that induced S G Hudrcth to withdraw Silver Fox for the reason that he did not think he could do himself justice in the going goingSarazen Sarazen does not like his races close together Hirsch found that out long ago and it is probable he will be indulged with another rest before he will be seen under colors again But if he continues to race kindly his performances in the Dixie and Metropolitan Handicaps would make it appear that he has a royal chance to finish out 1926 the champion of the handicap division divisionAmerican American Flag the colt that on last years form seemed to be the strongest sort of a contender for the championship this year is not a shadow of what he was in 1925 when Gwyn Tdmpkins put him at the top of the thrceycafjld division He has worked well enough to take his place with the best but his racing has been little short of miserable and he will have to be forgotten until he ac ¬ complishes something better in the afternoons W R Coes Black Maria made good hand ¬ somely in the running of the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on Monday It was what was expected by those who have followed the filly closely and those who saw her win the Ladies Handicap at Belmont Park ParkThe The Kentucky Oaks was run in a driving rainstorm and of course that was unfortunate for it affords an excuse for beaten horses so often but Black Maria since her defeat by Rapture and Ingrid in the Pimlico Oaks has come back to form that makes her a truly remarkable filly She has turned the tables on Rapture in both the Ladies Handicap and in the Kentucky Oaks and now the conviction is forced that she is probably a better filly lhan the daughter of Chicle and Enchanting It is true that Rapture was away so badly in the Ladies Handicap as to have had little racing chance but Black Maria beat her in a manner to indicate that the start has nothing to do with the result resultAs As for the Kentucky Oaks Rapture was away well and until that race she had a better reputation for mud running than did Black Maria I
