CLOSE FINISH AT FORT ERIE ♦ Four Starters in Niagara Handicap Closely Aligned at End. i Adia Wins, With Arno Second and Oehtf Rule Third — Fatoriles I "si II hj Hie Wayside. ♦ PORT BRIE, Ont.. June *£ Adria. the swift running daughter of Hourlcss- Adri-enne. which races for Walter I. Salmon, accounted for the Niagara Handicap, the feature of the seven race program carded at the NDgara Racing Associations course today, when she defeated a Rood band of sprinters over the three-quarters mile route Although the field that started was one of the smallest of the meeting, it was productive of a splendid contest when the entire four finished in a compact bunch. The proverbial blanket would have covered the quartette. The start was a g od one and Adria. be-giiming faster than usual, was allowed to go into a brief lead, with Mr. Pepp and Arno her closest pursuers, while Qokten Rule raced alotiR two lengths behind. There was little change in the running positions until reaching the stretch turn, where ;olden Rule loomed up dangerously on the outside. Adria retained her lead as the eighth post was reached, but was forced t a drive when Arno made a determmed effort, but held on tenaciously and was awarded a neck verdict. Arno outstayed Golden Rule by a length for second place, the latter just getting up in time to outstay Mr. Iepp. DROP IX TEMPERATURE. There was a slight drop in temperature hate today, but a good crowd was on hand to witness the card. Favorites again fell by the wayside in most instances, although racing: was of a spirited nature. Who Knows Me, after several efforts to break into the winning circle, finally found a field to bis liking in the opening number and scored under a mild drive over Lieutenant Karrell. with Button Bright getting the show portion of the purse. After a brief delay the field was sent on their way and Button Bright was rushed up on the inside of tlie field and succeeded in assuming a slight lead on reaching the half mile mark, with .M irgaretta K. and tbe winner in close pursuit. Who Knows Me gained the lead rounding the turn and. stalling off repeated bids from Lieutenant Farrcll. held him safe to the wire. Muskallonge that raced for G. C. Brenton mad - good in the second race, when he took a shifty hand of sprinters into camp after setting the pace from the outset of the three-quarters mile, and passed the finish line a length and a quarter in advance of Foreland, which raced close up with the leaders throughout and fought it out gamely with the winner. Polly l unbar received a heavy play in the the machines, but the best she could do was to snare the minor end of the purse from Ferrash. which raced up to the leaders with high speed rounding the far turn, but faltered when the pinch came. PKTERNELS GOOD HIRE. Fluffy Ruffles, well handled by Peternel and rricing hi her best form, upset calculations when she came from behind to beat a good field of Canadian-brcds over the mile distance in ihe third race, with nine starters. lVternel i:sed good judgement when he took the winner back In the early stages, the pace toeing set by Kings Court and timing his move well, rushed up to the leaders on the outside entering the home stretch and gaining the l-ad midway of the stretch was winner by three-quarters of a length. Royal Pearl raced up to Kings Court with fine speed and outstayed the Seagram starter, but could not keep pace in the final eighth. King"s Court went to the post a prohibitive choice being quoted at 1 to 2. Khuford showed tbe way home to a good band of two-year-olds that paraded in the fourth race, a five and a half furlongs sprint, coming from the rear of the others and working her way tojjie leaders with splendid speed, she movcdiqVat a rapid pace and. passing Sun Lynn* in ttie stretch, crossed the finish winnei/ by uf good length. Sun Lynn, the fa voriiiftok command shortly after the start and showed the way until entering the home stretch, then gave way to the winner and had to he ridden vigorously to save second place from Maid of Orleans. Heartache was in close quartan rounding the 01 turn out of the back stretch and unseated Schacfet who escaped with a slight shaking up. Remove, the gift horse, added another purse to his winning list when he scored in runaway fashion in the sixth race on the card Following the others until his rider culled on him. he gained fast and. disposing of the leaders as he .ntered the home stretch, he increased his lead until he was two and a half lengths to Oh good of Just with Scissors taking third n ?ey.
