Churchill Downs Latest TarfNews of Kentuckys Famous Race Course CHURCHILL DOWNS LOUISVILLE Ky KyMay May 13 13None None of the previous Derby winners now in stud service will have representation in the Derby field thus making safe Halmas per ¬ formance of siring a Derby winner Alan A Dale seven years after he carried the silks of Byron McClelland to victory in the run ¬ ning of 1895 1895While While William H Shelley prominent rac ¬ ing official missed the first four runnings of the Kentucky Derby as a result of his inter ¬ est in elementary school teachings he can recall the fifth running in which Lord Murphy was returned winner Lord M irphys success came in the first Kentucky Derby Mr Shelley witnessed and while his fashion of winning is only dimly recalled by the official lie well remembers several attending incidents of that day none more clearly than his falling out of an oak tree just out ¬ side the grounds and from where he watched Lord Murphy vanquish his rivals Mr Shel ¬ ley suffered a broken toe in the tumble but the painful injury proved not serious enough to prevent him from returning to his rural home astride the family mule Mr Shelley entertains the opinion that if he had worn shoes as his parents advised he might have avoided the fracture fractureMr Mr Shelley has been an annual visitor for the subsequent renewals of the race fol ¬ lowing the success of Lord Murphy and is well qualified to discuss the merits of the various victorious and unsuccessful partici ¬ pants in the various runnings When asked his opinion as to the most capable winner of the coveted race Mr Shelley took little time in naming Ben Brush in making reply He then quickly added that Hindoo probably was as good but if possible to bring together at the Derby distance and under equal weights the fortyeight winners of the Derbys I have witnessed Ben Brush would be my choice to win with Hindoo sec ¬ ond ondJohn John S Barbee II P Headley J P Head ley and Brownell Berryman were arrivals from Lexington and additions to the ranks of the hundreds who have not missed Derby renewals of recent years J W Parrish prominent business man of Midway Ky and owner of Rolled Stocking the outstanding western hope for Derby hon ¬ ors Friday declared that while he is hopeful of Rolled Stockings success his knowledge of the uncertainties and disappointments of the sport would greatly reduce his disappoint ¬ ment if Rolled Stocking fails to win If my colt wins I look for him to defeat his nearest opponent by several lengths and barring his suffering of bad luck during the running I will have no excuse for him said Mr Parrish ParrishHarry Harry Payne Whitney and his brother Payne Whitney are coming West from New York to witness the running of the Derby The former will be represented in the race by Bostonian and Whiskery which finished first and third In last Mondays running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico while Saxon will race under the colors of the Green tree Stable maintained by Mrs Payne Whit ¬ ney The Messrs Whitney who will make the trip in Mr Whitneys special coach con ¬ template a visit to the latters Kentucky breeding farm while en route West They are due to arrive here Saturday morning and are expected to be accompanied by a party of friends friendsMrs Mrs H E Croissant whose My Son was a late addition to the probable Derby field has been here for several days and contemplates s an idefinite stay I
