EIGHTEEN STARTERS Glorious Array of Superb Horses Named for Kentucky Derby H P Whitney Entry Favorite Rolled Stocking Main Re Reliance liance of the West WestCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS LOUISVILLE Ky May 13 Eighteen superb threeyearolds of aristocratic breeding and conformation trained to the minute have been named for the fiftythird running of the Kentucky Derby which will be decided at historical Churchill Downs Saturday afternoon afternoonA A veritable cloudburst that came with the running of the first race Friday left little chance for other than a muddy track for the running of the Derby though Churchill Downs dries out rapidly and there remains a bare chance that It may be brought back before the horses are called to the post postIt It was during the running of the first race and after its finish that the storm broke and rain fell in torrents until the track was covered with water before the field was called out for the second contest of the day dayWith With eighteen named the East holds the best hand both numerically and in point of apparent class Ten of the eighteen are easterners and of these Bostonian winner of the Preakness Stakes for Harry Payne Whitney and Whiskery his stablemate which finished third make the Whitney silks the natural choice over all the other Invaders InvadersEAST EAST HOLDS STRONG HAND HANDOthers Others from the East are the Greentree Stables Saxon winner of the Wood Memorial at Jamaica recently Walter J Salmons Black Panther Joseph E Wideners Osmand and Kiev E B McLeans Jock and War Eagle winner of the Miami Cup Handicap Rip Rap from the Sage Stable of H W Sage and Walter M Jeffords Scapa Flow winner of the Belmont Futurity of last year For this reason the 1927 Kentucky Derby has a greater interest to the sportsmen of New York Maryland and the East than in many a year and for the same reason an unusually large number of eastern sportsmen are already on hand to witness the running runningAll All of the various candidates that have been named with the exception of Saxon have come up to the big classic In mag ¬ nificent fashion but there seems to be a chance for many withdrawals before post time Saxon met with an injury shipping over from Baltimore after his effort in the Preakness and it is more than possible that he will not be at the post It is also possible that Jock will be the sole dependence of the McLean silks and some doubt is expressed regarding th3 start ¬ ing of Mr Kirkwood KirkwoodFor For days the crowds have been swarming Into Louisville and the last day rush came along Friday until the delightful Kentucky city never before had such a gathering of the best men of the turf and lovers of the sport from every section of the country Saturday morning numerous specials will pull into the city and with the many others heading Derbyward all of the former glori ¬ ous records for attendance promise to be eclipsed eclipsedHigh High speed displays over short distances put the finishing touches on the training of most of the threeyearolds which will con ¬ test for the J50000 added money and gold trophy in the fiftythird Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon afternoonVALUU VALUU OF THE V J Salmons Black Panther was given a work after the races Thursday shortly after trainer Tom Healey arrived from the East The colt went a mile and a quarter eased up in 221 Trainer Healey has confidence in his colt gt ing the mile and a quarter and expresses the belief that Black Panther would have won the Preakness had the distance of the Pimlico Stake been the same as the Derby route routeWhiskery Whiskery and Bostonian the Whitney pair which will rule favorite were not called upon for any work Friday Both colts are thor ¬ oughly fit and ready readyIt It is doubtful if Saxon will
