BUGLE CALL FOR KENTUCKY DERBY Record Attendance for This Country Expected to Witness FiftyThird Renewal of Americas Turf Classic Thousands Upon Thousands From All Sections of the United States Canada Canadaand and Elsewhere Gather in Louisville for the Turfs Greatest Outdoor OutdoorSpectacle Spectacle East and West Contest for Coveted Honor HonorLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 13 Today will ever be historic in the turf annals of Kentucky as the first Derby Day prophetically wrote the late B G Bruce as the opening expression of a concise account of the inauguration of the sport at Churchill Downs on Monday May 17 1875 And tomorrowfiftythfee years later at the same Churchill Downs we not only see that prophecy fulfilled but the Kentucky Derby the most famous race run in America From a modest beginning in 1875 and for many years of interest mainly to Kentuckians and citizens of the neighboring states it has grown to be an American event of almost international importance attracting widespread attention all over this country Canada Cuba Mexico and even abroad abroadDerby Derby the magic word of the turf is tonight the password of this beseiged city of Louisville where thousands and thousands of sportloving men and women are camped after traveling by auto rail water and even by foot from near and far the delegation from Chicago probably being the largest from any one city This countless army awaits the dawn of tomorrow to move on to historical Churchill Downs there to witness the now worlds famous Kentucky Derby It is Club which was founded in 1875 It is a far cry from the 10000 that saw the first Kentucky Derby run fiftythree years ago to the probable 100000 that are expected to see the notable race tomorrow Churchill Downs is one of the oldest race tracks in this country and was named after the owners of the ground on which the course was built John and Henry Churchill Col M Lewis Clark founded the Louisville Jockey Club and the first meeting at Churchill Downs was held in the spring of 1875 with the first running of the Kentucky Derby as the big racing attraction of the day dayAlthough Although the first Derby was only worth 2850 to the winner the leading turfmen of Kentucky sought the coveted honor of carrying off the prize The field was a distinguished one among the entries being the mighty Ten Broeck which fin ¬ ished outside the money H P McGraths Aristides was the winner with Volcano second and Verdigris third Thus began in an humble way the Kentucky Derby which has now become the most famous of American horse races racesThat That there is much of fine sentiment attaching to racing is annually demonstrated when the recognized greater races reach their time of decision Staid selfcontained Englishmen of all grades from King to costermonger gather in hundreds of thousands on Epsom Downs to witness the running of the worldfamous Epsom Derby dubbed by Disraeli The Blue iRiband of the Turf Similar vast throngs of Frenchmen assemble in the BoisdeBoulogne to worship the winner of the Grand Prize of Paris Nor is America backward in giving vent to its enthusiasm and pleasure over the thrills of a great race as will be demonstrated tomorrow at Churchill Downs when the cheers of the thousands gathered there will be carried to the thousands and thousands who while not fortunate enough to be present will through means of one of our modern miracles the radio be listening in during the running of the Kentucky Derby as the blue bloods of turfdom struggle valiantly for the glory and spoils that go to the winner The East and West have shared equally in Derby honors for the past six years During the half dozen seasons Black Gold Bubbling Over and Behave Yourself have won for western owners while Moryich Zev and Flying Ebony were suc ¬ cessful invaders Bubbling Over and Behave Yourself raced for Col E R Bradley Whose noted sire Black Toney sired Black Gold which raced under the colors of Mrs R M Hoots Morvich was the property of Benjamin Black while Zev came from the Rancocas Stable of Harry F Sinclair and Flying Ebony was Gifford A Cochrans only successful represen ¬ tative in the prized event eventThe The largest field that ever tried for honors in a running of the Kentucky Derby paraded to the post for the 1923 run ¬ ning int which the Rancocas Stables Zev was returned an unexpected winner The sta e is all set for this mammoth spectacle generalmanager Col Matt J Winn and his associates in the Kentucky Jockey Club having completed all arrangements and preparations and all that remains to make Derby Day ideally success ¬ ful is a kind weather man to furnish clear skies and bright sunshine
