ADVANCE OF FRED HOPKINS One of Few to Win Both Preak ness and Derby Same Year Has Rapid Rise In His Chosen Profession Rolled Stocking Only Derby Starter Starterto to Be Injured 1 LOUISVILLE Ky Ma l6 When Whisk ry outgamed Osmand in that thrilling fin ish forDerbj honors it marked the advance of trainer Fred Hdpkihs into the small circle of trainers who have saddled winners of the Preakncss and Derby in the same year Hop ¬ kins pulled the girth on Bostonian for his Preakness engagement H G Bedwell who accounted for the Derby and Preakness with J K L Ross Sir Barton in 1919 and the late W B Duke who was in charge of the training of Gifford Cochrans Coventry and Flying Ebony winner respectively of the Preakness and Derby renewals of 1925 are the only others that have succeeded infur ¬ nishing the winners of the two coveted races the same year j Hopkins who will celebrate his twenty seventh birthday on December 22 of the cur ¬ rent year is the youngest trainer to gain the distinction of saddling Derby and Preakness winners This performance more firmly establishes the youthful trainer who is a protege of James Rowe Sr chief jot H P Whitneys staff as one of the leading members of his profession Hopkins who broke into the sport as an exercise boy and later rode with a fair degree of success for several years developed Whiskery which has been in his charge since early last year and this spring conditioned Bostonian for his triumphant Preakness performance Among other outstanding horses he has trained are Spot Cash Noah Pandera Rapture Mother Goose Maud Muller Blondin and others othersThe The young trainer was attracted to the Saratoga track from his Shelburn Vt home in 1912 at a time when he had not reached his twelfth birthday He found employment under the late Sam Clopton who was train ¬ ing a division of the Whitney Stable and a goodly number of horses for himself For two years Hopkins performed the duties of an exercise boy and during ithe spring meet ¬ ing of 1914 at Aqueduct was entrusted with liis first mount a filly named Tarts Hop ¬ kins rode a winning race astride the filly the particular race being the Rockaway Sell ¬ ing Stakes This inaugurated a fairly suc ¬ cessful riding career that culminated in 1921 as a result of increasing weight weightJOIXS JOIXS WHITNEY STABLE STABLEWith With the death of Mr Clopton in 1921 Hopkins passed into the employ of James Rowe Sr and after two years of training under this noted conditioner of thorough ¬ breds was entrusted with a division of the Whitney Stable Each succeeding year has found Mr Rowe entrusting his youthful pro ¬ tege with a greater number of horses and each year the skillful youngster has respond ¬ ed with greater performance performanceBefore Before departing for New York Sunday Hopkins announced that Blondin may be shipped here to participate in the Grainger Memorial Handicap next Saturday If the horse trains as well as he is expected to he will come West Hopkins said J E Griffiths Single Foot is another easternowned eligible scheduled to go to the post for the Grainger GraingerAs As far as could be ascertained Monday J W Pairishs Rolled Stocking was the only starter to receive injuries during the running of the Derby This unlucky colt received a long deep cut on the outside of his right foreleg and hoof when Buddy Bauer stepped on the member while at the barrier Dur ¬ ing the mixup between the feet of the fwo horses Rolled Stockings plate became loosened and when he was examined after the race the shoe was dangling from one nail and the hoof was splintered in several places Trainer C C Van Meter expressed surprise that the colt did not injure himself more seriously running on the loose plate plateBlack Black Panther Rip Rap and Saxon re ¬ turned from Louisville in the same car with the Whitney pair Trainer Phillips said yes ¬ terday that he had not the opportunity to study Saxons condition but he hoped there was nothing that might be of a permanent injury to the Greentree colt coltTrainer Trainer Tom Healey who was among the arrivals said Black Panther did fully as well as was expected of him but he has lots of faith in the Salmon colts future Healey said Whiskerys race showed he is a star and certain to go to a greater accomplishment
