SHASTA GOLD BY NOSE Creech Filly Takes Midway Purse at Aurora in Final Strides Miss Mischief Scores Her Second SecondStraight Straight Win in Second Race Ideal Weather Prevails AURORA 111 May 16 With the excep ¬ tion of one race the program offered by the Exposition Park Jockey Club this after ¬ noon was made up of claiming races and en ¬ tries for the same were comprised almost entirely of platers of the more lowly grade The program lacked anything in the way of an outstanding attraction and there was an absence of stars Nevertheless racing of the best brand was provided by those that did participate and close finishes and the excit ¬ ing incidents occurring in the races made for interesting sport which at all times bor ¬ dered on the spectacular and provided plenty of thrills and excitement for a large crowd which turned out Ideal weather conditions prevailed while a fast track was the rule for the various contests contestsThe The Midway Purse fourth on the card a dash of threequarters for threeyearolds and over was the one race on Mondays program not staged under claiming condi ¬ tions It called for a field of eight to try conclusions and the closest finish of the aft ¬ ernoon resulted B Creechs Shasta Gold was the eventual winner of the contest de ¬ feating the Dearborn Stables Sturdy Stella by a matter of inches while Sturdy Stella finished two lengths in advance of Sureshot for second place A length away came Far Over in fourth position easily held safe by Sureshot at the end when the latter secured third portion of the purse purseBEST BEST FRIEND PACEMAKER PACEMAKERThe The first three to finish and Best Friend were the most prominent factors in the early running of the race Best Friend showed good speed from the start and elected to set the early pace Sturdy Stella and Sureshot raced in close pursuit with Shasta Gold rac ¬ ing restrained in fourth position Best Friend relinquished the lead to Sturdy Stella after going a halfmile and tiring soon after eventually finished out of it and badly beaten Entering the stretch Sturdy Stella was in the lead with Sureshot pressing her closely and Best Friend was dropping back The leaders raced wide on the last turn and Shasta Gold racing next to the inner rail saved much ground and quicky moved to the front by a safe margin When seemingly having the race won an eighth away Shasta Gold began to tire and under hard urg ¬ ing at the end just managed to last long enough to defeat Sturdy Stella in the last stride when the latter came again with a resolute challenge in the middle of the track Shasta Gold managed to poke her nose in front at the end and was warded the decision decisionFavorites Favorites began auspiciously when the wellbacked Pollymara ridden by jockey C E Allen triumphed over a band of twelve in the initial offering Move on Seth was the one to annex secondplace verdict with Boomerang landing a bangup third thirdBRAEDALUANE BRAEDALUANE FAILURE FAILUREThe The aged gelding Braedalbane faltered his backers with a display of keen early sped which saw him in the lead by a good margin for the fiist halfmile of the five and one half furlongs Ternley Move on Seth Boomerang and Pollymara followed the leader closest all racing in a group and closely bunched together strung across the track with Pollymara having something the worst of it being carried very wide on the turns Braedalbane gave it up at the stretch turn and Move on Seth then took the lead to hold it until well inside the last eighth Polly ¬ mara when straightened out for the finish gradually were down Move on Seth and finishing gamely passed him a few yards out vanquishing him in the last strides stridesIt It was the second time during the meeting that the Willis Sharpe Kilmer silks have been carried to victory and on each occasion the successful one was a maiden youngster making its initial start in a race Honey nook displaying much early speed raced away into a long lead at the start and seemed in a fair way to make a runaway of the contest However the leader began tir ¬ ing rapidly in the stretch and was quickly caught by the nearest pursuers and soon fell back Hesitation then moved of the afternoon and resulted in another harIine finish when Foreland staggered over the wire winner by a nose from Daddy Wolf Kendall and eight others Kendall set the pace while Foreland racd in another of these resulted in the sixth nice Teas Ready was the one to take this purse scoring from Sincere Love Child and nine others in a driving finish at the end of the one and c sixteenths miles
