TAPS FOR J C GALLAHER Noted Trainer and Owner Passes Away at Tucson Arizona Owned and Bred Worth Kentucky Derby DerbyWinner Winner ChKhowce Uejralo 3Ienifec and and3Iany 3Iany Others of Jfote LEXINGTON Ky May 1C John Chal7 mcrs Galaher 43 brother pf Allan Gal laher both of this city and widelyknown as a partner in Gallaher Brothcs died this morning at Tucson Ariz where he had been for more than a year in thlThope that he might regain his health Information of his death came to Allan Gallaher from Miss Anna K Jenkins sister of John Gallahcrs deceased wife Miss Jenkins had been at his bedside for the past two months and while she and his brother were of the opinion that the patient would not recover his death was not expected at this time Besides his brother the deceased is survived by a son John G Jr and a daughter Mattie May 15 The body is expected here Wednesday night or Thursday following services in the chapeL chapeLJohn John and Allan Gallaher are natives of Knoxville Tenn and came to the turf twenty years ago as owners in partnership with J S Hawkins of Hyperion II and Wing Ting grand dam of Rolled Stocking They have bred and owned many horses in ¬ cluding Worth winner of the Kentucky Derby Duval Regalo Pongee Mary Talbot Clynn Chilhowee Cherokee and Menifee John Gallaher was the trainer of the firm and was very proficient until his illness took him away from the turf After his forced retirement some four years ago Sewell Combs took an interest with Allan Gallaher in the ownership of several horses and they now have racing in their colors the good filly Mary Jane winner of the Ashland Oaks at the Lexington Spring meeting meetingLOUISVILLE LOUISVILLE Ky May 1C News of the death of John C Gallaher after a lingering1 illness at Tuscon Ariz was received with deep regret here Mr Gallaher has been in poor health for several years and it was with hope of improving his condition that he returned to Tucson a short time ago fol ¬ lowing a lengthy stay at Ashville N C where he occupied a suite with the late Bel mont Rowe who died only a few weeks ago Mr Gallaher raced a number of thorough ¬ breds in partnership with his brother Allan B Gallaher and S Combs CombsAmong Among the notable horses to carry their colors were Chilhowee which after several recordbreaking performances on the Ken ¬ tucky tracks was sold to E A Hart of New York for a big price Chilhowee is now in the stud Pongee Glynn Bounnon Lass Mary Jane and other consistent winners also carried his colors colorsMr Mr Gallaher was held in high esteem by turfmen and listed among his many close friends were the leading horsemen and of ¬ ficials ficialsNews News of his death cast a pall of sorrow over his many friends here today The body will be returned to the Gallaher home near Lexington for burial Out of respect for the late turfman Frenchburg was withdrawn from the first race today
