NEW YORK N Y May 20 Joseph E Wideners hope for the Belmont Stakes Chance Shot had his first race of the year at Belmont Park yesterday and made good It was a seveneighths mile handicap over the main course and the brother of Chance Play raced the distance in 12G over a muddy track making the performance at least a creditable one when it is considered that under his 126 pounds he was giving away from twelve to twentythree pounds to the other starters At the end he was Jaeing ridden out by Sande to hold Frank M Kellys Medley safe by a length and a half and six lengths further back came jGeorge D Wideners Clearence while back of him in order was Watkinson Young Prince and Crystal Pennant PennantAfter After the miserable weather that marred the inaugural Thursday conditions were much more pleasant for the second day of the meeting but the track was muddy from the rain that had fallen and even more diffi ¬ cult to race over than it was opening day dayIn In the handicap that fell to Chance Shot the only withdrawal before post time was Walter J Salmons Teheran leaving an even halfdozen to face the barrier barrierThere There was a short delay at the post and as the barrier rose both Watkinson and Medley beat Chance Shot away and Clear ¬ ance left with such a rush that in a dozen strides he was showing the way and setting a fast pace when he raced the first eighth in the soft going in 24 Sande soon had Chance Shot in second place but he was two lengths back of the George Widener colt and galloping under slight restraint Medley was close up and the other three followed along Sande bided his time with Chance Shot and did not make any serious effort to catch i Clearance until the stretch was reached j Thera he went after the leader and soon raced him into defeat but in doing so he came out slightly from the rail while Herbert saved ground with Medley and came with a rush Continued on eighteenth page WIDENER STAR IN FRONT Continued from first page Sande was wide awake to Medleys rush and had to hustle Chance Shot along vigor ¬ ously to make victory certain Medley was the only one that threatened in the stretch and it appeared that Chance Shot did not en ¬ tirely like the footing Altogether the race was a good one and it should accomplish much good in his Belmont preparation preparationThere There were eighteen twoyearolds of the plater variety in the opening dash over the Wideher Course and Henrietta Wildair scored by a harrow margin from Star Rocket while two lengths further back W R Coes Bookie just nosed out Polls a Robert L Gerry starter for the short end of the purse purseAt At the early racing Gay Lotharce a second Coe starter showed a flash of speed but raced greenly and soon dropped out of the contention while both Henrietta AVildair and Star Rocket were always in the front divi ¬ sion and Bookie was not far away awayIn In the final eighth Henrietta Wildair and Star Rocket drew out slightly and they were locked all the way home with the filly just showing her head in front at the end Polls finished with courage and would have beaten Bookie for third place in another stride while the others were rather badly strung out outWin Win Ziegler Jrs Bois de Rose proved easily best of those that came together in the mile condition race that was the second offering when he easily led home Post Time from the Hamilton Farm Stable with the Greentree Stables Overlooked as easily sav ¬ ing third from Harry Payne Whitneys Re ¬ minder It was a good start and James But ¬ lers Mote quickly went into the command but Fator had Bois de Rose right after him and the Ziegler colt was showing more speed than has been his custom Reminder on the other hand did not seem to relish the going and Josiah was hard at work on him early in an effort to keep him in the parade Before the stretch was reached Mote had tired and Bois de Rose went into the lead with small effort Once clear Fator had only to sit still and the son of Negofol galloped to an easy score Post Time made a bid at flie head of the stretch but when Burke saw that the casing his mount in the last sixteenth Over ¬ looked had no trouble saving third and each horse was separated by plenty of daylight at the end endCelidon Celidon was winner of the Baldwin Purse at a mile and a sixteenth but he was forced to his best through the final eighth to with ¬ stand the rushes of the Sagamore Stables Montferrat and A C Bostwicks King Solo ¬ mons Seal At the end the Rancdcas Stable gelding was still a length to the good but Fator was forced to drive him hard to save the day Montferrat just beat King Solo ¬ mons Seal by a head and three lengths back of the Bostwick campaigner came the Rose dale Stables Architect ArchitectXeedle Xeedle Gun played a part in making it Celidon the winner He went along with the son of Xegofol all through the early racing the pair of them drawing out to a long lead over the others Celidon put Xeedle Gun away at the head of the stretch but it had cost him some effort and it was for that reason that he was tiring in the final eighth Sande had Montferrat off well but he wisely eased back from the pace and then when the stretch was reached he set him down to be ¬ come a real menace in the final eighth King Solomons Seal as usual was badly outrun iii the early stages but he was dosing in magnificent style at the endr and would un ¬ doubtedly have taken second place in a1 few more strides The others in the field cut less figure arid were thoroughly beaten beatenSeventeen Seventeen maiden juveniles met in the four and a half furlongs fifth trace and A J Joyner sent the winner to the post in George D Wideners Gerard a son of Ambassador IV and Crepusicule Pony McAtee had the mount and his skill played an important part when he got his mount home winner by a head from William Ziegler Jrs Kirkover with W R Coes Algernon only a half length further back The others were four lengths away and headed by Iron Crown from the Greentree Stable There was much bumping and crowding in the race and Beo ¬ wulf was one of the chief sufferers sufferersAt At the end of the program Scat racing for Mrs J Byer was rather an easy win ¬ ner from Burt G Lewis Don Bonero while F J Buchanans Medius saved third place This was a mile and one sixteenth race for platers and Scat dominated the running after racing Top Sergeant into defeat and had no further trouble Top Sergeant pulled up lame
