CANADIAN RACING TODAY Historic Kings Plate Inaugural Feature of Woodbine Parks Opening Day Program TORONTO Ont May 20 The Kings Plate Canadas famous turf classic which has the distinction of being the oldest turf fixture run continuously on the North Amer ¬ ican continent will be the feature at Wood ¬ bine tomorrow when the curtain on the rac ¬ ing season in Canada for 1927 will be rung up The stage is all set for what promises to be the greatest racing drama in this part of the country countryConditions Conditions are favorable for a great after ¬ noons sport Pleasant weather and a fast track coupled with a highciass program of seven races should bring out a record crowd to this picturesque racing ground groundThe The Kings Plate is of course the big at ¬ traction This year there are eighteen pro ¬ gramed to go to the post The list in ¬ cludes the pick of the Canadian breds To lend added attraction to its running the Ontario Jockey Club has increased the amount of added money this year to 15000 Of this amount 1000 is donated to the breeder of the winner while something like 10000 goes to the owner of the winner winnerTomorrows Tomorrows running of the old fixture marks the sixtyeighth running of the stake The Seagram Stable is represented by Gems to Let Gay Parisian Quartzite and Rex Muscarum while the Fletcher New and Glassco Stables have two starters A ma ¬ jority of those named have shown good trials The threeyearold Mr Gaiety has worked the fastest Taurus has also shown up well and it will not be surprising to find this pair battling it out at the end Mr Gaiety will be coupled with Capitol another good colt which showed up particularly well last year R Fisher has been engaged to ride Mr Gaiety while Jimmy Butwell will have the leg up on Taurus Perlapides from the Fletcher stable is fancied by some shrewd observers and it may be that he will finish a surprise surpriseThe The Woodbine Steeplechase 7500 added over the two miles and a half course is an added attraction There are six named to start in this race Autumn Bells being top weight at 147 pounds A majority of the other events are sprint dashes in which large fiolds arc carded Other parts of Canada where the racing season also gets under way tomorrow are Montreal where a sevenday meeting is being staged by the Back River Jockey Club and in the middlewest where a meeting of similar duration is being inaugurated at Victoria Park Calgary Their excellencies Viscount and Lady Willingdon will open the Woodbine meeting and among other notables expected to attend is Right Hon W L M King premier of Canada
