CHEEK GELDING WINS Oldest Active Horseman Saddles Winner at Exposition Park on Attendance Which Is Large Despite the Conditions AURORA 111 May 27 Inclement weather and otherwise uninviting con ¬ ditions greeted racegoers at Exposition Park this afternoon but despite the bad weather a surprisingly large crowd turned out to witness the sport An unevent ¬ ful afternoon of racing was the outcome of a program comprised entirely of claiming races in which ordinary platers started However good sport was provided but the public fared rather poorly in their quest for winners as winners proved elusive elusiveThe The fifth race brought out the best band starting during the afternoon and nine made up the field The veteran trainer and horse ¬ man Thomas Cheek once again broke into the winning column when Basha a four yearold gelding sprinted to an easy win over Mrs K A Gross Tom P which an ¬ nexed the second portion of the purse while third place was the allotment of J W Ittleys Stay On The race was a hard fought one though Basha after taking the lead in the first quarter never relinquished his ad ¬ vantage and came to the finish under re ¬ straint and two and a half lengths in ad ¬ vance of Tom P Tom P proved as easily best for second place easily outstaying the others for that place placeThe The finish for third place was close Stay On just got up at the end to take that por ¬ tion of the purse Eminent came from far back and closed a big gap gapTHE THE ABBOT SCORES SCORESThe The Abbot which races for the Battle Axe Stable secured another purse for his owners when racing in his best form he led throughout the threequarters of the second race to score in a driving finish from Cora Russell Pollymara and five other fair sprinters The eventual winners margin of lead throughout was brief as Pollymara attended the pace closely and was in danger of overtaking the winner almost at any point Cora Russell racing on the inside under energetic handling also raced close to the leaders to the stretch The Abbot did not tire when pressed hard and racing Pollymara into defeat drew into the lead undisputed Pollymara commenced to tire and was out finished for second place near the end by the fast coming Cora Russell These three dominated the front positions the entire way and the others were never prominent The Abbot was a smartly backed choice and made good satisfactorily satisfactorilyA A surprise occurred in the third race which was fashioned for twoyearolds under claiming conditions at fiveeights H C McConnells Mat Hunter unexpectedly took the measure of Honeyfish Kischef Macher and six other youngsters in good style From a ragged start Kischef Macher set the early pace for a halfmile racing shortly in the lead of Mat Hunter and Sheepshead Bay in the closely bunched field to the final turn into the home stretch Kischef Macher began to tire and succumbed to the chal ¬ lenge of Mat Hunter threesixteenths away and the latter then assumed command and was never headed holding safe the final challenge of Honeyfish in the last fifty yards Honeyfish came from the rear of the leaders in the last eigiith and easily disposed of the remainder to take second place Kischef Macher though tiring from his early efforts held on well and lasted to save third place It was the winners maiden victory victoryA A BEIUFAX VICTORY VICTORYB B Bermans Outlawed scored his owners first success of the meeting when he won in the fourth race a dash of threequarters The welluacked Gilmore raced into second place while Mrs L M Holmes Charcoal wound up third Myrtle Belle raced well and showed early speed in the race then held on well in the final drive and took fourth money Charcoal was the early leader closely fol ¬ lowed by Outlawed to the stretch where the latter challenged and proving best took the lead an eighth out and had plenty in reserve i to stall of the final rush of Gilmore at the finish Gilmore after having been a forward factor from the start finished with a rush and was wearing the winner down but was unable to get up in time timeBe Be Yourself racing in his best form ac counted for the sixth race at a mile and a sixteenth Shindy raced into second place while Foolscap came next many lengths back of the two leaders in third place Shindy set the early pace and was in the lead until the stretch was reached Be Coatinued on twentyrfoarth pace CHEEK GELDING WINS Continued from first page Yourself pursued him closely to that point then coming around the outside gained a half length advantage and the pair staged a thrilling struggle in the final eighth for the purse Both were well punished and Be Yourself proved best and maintained his slight advantage to the end to score by a half length Foolscap proved easily best for third place in the final drive
