j j j PAYNE WHITNEY PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS RESPECTSJockey Jockey Club Members and Other OtherTurf Turf Notables Are Present at atPayne Payne Whitneys Funeral NEW YORK N Y May 27 Christ Church at Manhasset was filled today at noon to attend the beautiful but simple funeral of the late Payne Whitney which was conducted in the ritual of the Episcopal Church with the Rev Charles Ricker offici ¬ ating assisted by Rev Dr Endicott Peabody head master of the Groton School SchoolAmong Among those present outside of the imme ¬ diate members of the family which embraced exSenator James W Wadsworth whose wife is a sister to Mrs Whitney were the stewards of The Jockey Club with chairman Frank K Sturgis at their head Mr Whit ¬ ney was a steward of the governing body of The Jockey Club and in addition to Mr Sturgis there were present William Wood ¬ ward Joseph E Widener J C Cowdin Richard T Wilson Alfred Hennen Morris and Joseph E Davis DavisOthers Others assembled to do honor to the mem ¬ ory of a fine type of citizen whose passing is universally deplored were Mr and Mrs Robert E Bacon Mr and Mrs Francis P Garvin Walter B Jennings J H Harding Col Richard H Williams H W Sage An ¬ drew Sage Lawrence Waterbury Mr and Mrs Harry F Sinclair Harry Gruner F K Schoosely Clarence McCormick Mr and Mrs Thomas Hitchcock Mr and Mrs F Ambrose Clark Samuel Pryor Henry W Bull Fred ¬ erick Watrous Frederick B Corey Samuel Clark exSenator Stephen B Elkins James Rowe Sr James Rowe JrJ A J Joyner Rowland Robbins Clyde Phillips Vincent Powers Lester R Doctor Mr and Mrs William Averill Harriman HarrimanAt At a special meeting of The Jockey Cub held in The Jockey Club rooms at Belmont Park with Chairman Frank K Sturgis pre ¬ siding and the following members in atten ¬ dance Frank K Sturgis William Woodward George H Bull Joseph E Widener Richard T Wilson F Ambrose Clark Joseph E Davis Marshall Field P W Maxwell H W Sage Walter M Jefferds Alfred Henne morris Samuel Ross and George H Walker resolutions on the death of their late fellow member were adopted and subsequently rati ¬ fied at a special meeting of the board of stewards of The Jockey Club ClubIt It was estimated that about four hundred persons were in the church for the services which lasted less than half an hour At its close the vested choir and clergy and friends of the dead sportsman followed the body to the open grave where the committal service was read There was no eulogy The coffin of black wood was borne by pro ¬ fessional pall bearers The funeral arrange ¬ ments were made by Lawrence AVatcrbury a family friend of the Whitneys for years yearsThe The body was brought to the church from Grecntree the nearby Whitney estate at 11 oclocK in accordance with Anglican custom it lay before the altar for an hour or more before the funeral services began beganJohn John Payne Whitney the son is dua here next Friday from Europe Aii undergraduate at Cambridge University England he was in Spain on a tour when his father died
