WOODBINE MEETING WANES FrJmouth Plate Handicap Feature of SemiFinal Day Pink and Bine Colors of Walter J Salmon 1 Carried to Victory by Devonshire Kol DCS Montagnes Second TORONTO Ont May 27 For the semi ¬ final day of the spring meeting at the Wood ¬ bine course of the Ontario Jockey Club track conditions showed decided improvement and for the first time in several days fast time was recorded in the races offered of which the Falmouth Plate Handicap was the out ¬ standing attraction This race attracted six starters and the running produced one of the best finishes of the day The remainder of the program with the exception of the initial race was given over to the medium grade of platers platersThe The pink and blue colors of Walter J Sal ¬ mon were carried to an easy victory when Devonshire showed a most impressive per ¬ formance to defeat the good band that opposed him in the Falmouth Plate Handi ¬ cap the main race of the day This was decided over the mile and onesixteenth route and six faced the barrier with Roi Des Montagnes a recent winner at the meeting being accorded the place of honor in the wagering but accounting for the place por ¬ tion of the purse was the best he could accomplish being beaten eight lengths by the Salmon starter and just three parts of a length to the fore of Aucilla with Lieuten ¬ ant II a half length in the rear rearFrom From a good start Roi Des Montagnes and Devonshire were first to show from the barrier with Roi Des Montagnes having most speed and she quickly gained the lead while Lieutenant II was rushed up on the outside to move into second place and Devonshire raced in third place There was no change in the first threequarters but on reaching the turn out of the back stretch Lieutenant II moved to the leader to head the French colt momentarily However Devonshire moved simultaneously and before reaching the stretch had taken command and in ¬ creased his lead while Roi Des Montagnes held on gamely and succeeded in getting back to the place position positionLOCAL LOCAL OWJfER WINNER WINNERThe The locally owned Riverside Stable sup ¬ plied the first winner of the afternoon when Ellen O proved best of five other maiden juvenile fillies that faced the barrier for the four and a half furlongs dash that opened the days activities Ellen O was quickest to get under way when the barrier was released and scampering away into a good lead held the oddson favorite Cos ¬ metic safe all during the running to score by two lengths Burstone from the J K L Ross Stable finished third with the others well strung out On the way to the pest Dorfu unseated Bulcroft and ran away into the stable enclosure before being subdued while Cosmetic took a notion to gallop off for about threeeighths preceding the start at a slow rate of speed speedThere There were only four starters in the Lion Heart Steeplechase NeapTide was the one favored in the wagering and went to the post a wellbacked favorite He flattered his admirers by taking the lead soon after the start and showing in front until the ninth fence where he made a bad landing and lost his rider Kangaroo then assumed command and managed to keep it the remainder of the way although a head separated him from Ruine at the end These two were the only ones to finish the coures without mishap At the tenth jump Heart Breaker which was a distant trailer came to brief but was re ¬ mounted by Duncan and finished the course courseThe The finish resolved itself into a desperate duel between Kangaroo and Ruinc The for ¬ mer had a lead of a length going over the last fence but then began bearing over to the out ¬ side Ruine finished straight and true and in game fashion and was gradually wearing the winner down He just failed to make it however but in a stride or two past the winning mark he was in front of Kangaroo KangarooHawk Hawk God racing for C Ferraro and an extreme outsider in the wagering made every inch of the journey in the third race a dash over the threequarter route a winning one to take into camp one of the best fields of sprinters of the afternoon Emery had the mount on the winner and having him away in the first flight took command shortly after the start stalled off early opposition from Pitchfork another at long odds to score by a length with the latter having a like margin over Gymkhana GymkhanaW W Fenwicks Shorty made amends some ¬ what for form followers when he accounted for the second juvenile affair of the after ¬ noon which held the fourth position on the program In the early stages of the contest Shoity gave his backers much concern as he was shuffled back soon after the start and was next to last at one stage of the journey j However when well settled in his stride he mowed the leaders down with belated speed and managed to get up in the concluding strides to take the measure of Bedford Saint with Support in third place Bedford Saint was the one to set the pace until well into home stretch before he showed signs of tiring
