TRIO OF ATTRACTIONS Jolly Roger Dice and Valorous Take Belmont Features Dice Adds to Reputation by Cap ¬ turing the Juvenile Stakes Valorous Fine Race NEW YORK N T May 28 It was wonderful day of holiday racing that was offered an immense Saturday throng at Bel ¬ mont Park today Jolly Roger from the Greentree Stable scored a popular victory in the running of the Charles L Appleton Memorial steeplechase steeplechaseDice Dice from the Wheatley Stable of Mrs H C Phipps and her brother Ogden Mills added the Juvenile Stakes to his score of last Saturday in the Keene Memorial and Va ¬ lorous the H P Whitney hope for the Bel ¬ mont Stakes proved his worth when he de ¬ feated his stablemate Macaw in the mile and an eighth Select an overnight handi ¬ cap These were the races that made it a great day of sport sportOnly Only five went to the post for the Select Handicap and the Whitney pair of Macaw and Valorous never left the result in doubt Macaw went to the front under a stiff restraint and Fator rated Valorous back of him and alongside Sanford to which he was conceding two years and two pounds Feu Follet bearing the Joseph E Widener colors and starting for the first time in this coun ¬ try was further away while Forever and Ever brought up the rear rearEllis Ellis never eased his pull on Macaw until well into the stretch and he had by that time raced Sanford into defeat Valorous was under the same restraint until an eighth from home when Fator roused the three yearold and set sail for the leader Ellis when he saw the Fator move roused Macaw as though the danger threatened from an enemy and the crowd was treated to a desperate finish between stablemates They Continued oil twentieth page TRIO OF ATTRACTIONS Continued from first page battled it out right to the end and Valorous proved the master when in the closing strides he headed Macaw to beat him a neck This final rush took the pair of them out six lengths before Forever and Ever which had come with a great rattle at the end to easily take third from the tired Sanford while Feu Follet was a distant last The race was one to give Valorous a real Belmont importance and he proved himself well worthy of a battle with Chance Shot the Joseph E Widener winner of the Withers Dice gave further evidence of his high class when he was the winner of the Juven ¬ ile Stakes adding just 15700 to his excel ¬ lent score By reason of having won the Keene Memorial a week ago he was required to shoulder 125 pounds just three pounds over the scale and in this running he made pace throughout to beat Harry Payne Whit ¬ neys Groucher by a length while Groucher in turn was just a head before William Zieg ler Jrs Kirkover with Benjamin Blocks Mordine rather a distant fourth fourthThere There was a long delay at the post for which Groucher was chiefly to blame and during his crazy antics he unseated Benham twice and when the barrier rose he was off none too well Kirkover left in his stride and for an instant he showed in front but he soon gave way to Dice and once the son of Dominant Frumpery was in com ¬ mand he never surrendered Mordine under the hustling ride of Earl Sande for a time was right up in front division and Kirkover hung to his place resolutely while Pollywog the stablemate to Groucher interfered a bit with him and as a result he was not really in a full racing stride until it was too late lateThrough Through the last eighth Groucher closed with excellent courage along the inside rail but his move came too late though he was right at the heels of Dice and a head before Kirkover Mordine had really no excuse and when the pinch came at the end he tired to drop back badly in the closing strides stridesIt It was a tremendously popular victory with the big crowd when Jolly Roger bearing the silks of Mrs Payne Whitneys Greentrce Stable was a comparatively easy winner of the Charles L Appleton Memorial Cup Steeplechase It was doubly appropriate for the reason that the fair owner of the Green tree Stable presents a cup to the owner of the winner to be held until the succeeding running runningThe The race was worth 6200 to the winner and Jolly Roger was riilden with excellent judgment by A Ferguson Thomas Paine from the B B Stable raced to second place with Bayard Warrens Upsal third Joseph E Wideners Lizard fourth and Fredden Rock from the Brookmeade Stable last The only other starter was Nicholas from Mrs Van derbilts Fair Stable and cutting out the pace until two fences from home he stumbled badly there and unseated J Pierce who had the mount mountThe The start was a good one and Nicholas quickly raced away from the others He was particularly rank and Pierce was utterly un ¬ able to take him back Upsal wns racing along strongly in second place with Lizard a good third while Thomas Paine was lead ¬ ing both Jolly Roger and Fredden Rock with Ferguson saving ground on the Greentree Stable jumper jumperJolly Jolly Roger was the first over the last fence and from there to the finish he held Thomas Paine safe after the B B Stable hope had disposed of the tired Upsal Lizard was being cased up while Fredden Rock had raced last throughout and was at no time close to the contender
