HERTZ COLT IMPRESSES ♦ Reigh Count Gallops One Mile in 1:47y5 Easily. » Whiskarm Creates Stir Among Work Watchers at Louisville — Older Horses Out. ♦ LOUISVH.LE, Ky„ April 6.— Displaying the same excellent form that has characterized all of his Derby ttials this year, Reigh Count, favorite for the rich race, ran seven-eighths and was galloped out a mile at Churchill Downs this morning. It was the first time the son of Sunreigh — Contessina had been asked to go further than three-quarters, and it was easily the best showing he has made so far in his training. He ran the seven-eighths in 1:31% and then was eased up to complete the mile in 1 :47%. Reigh Count was accompanied on the trip by Otto Lehmans Derby hope, Reigh Olga, which is being trained in the same stable. Sea Rip. the other Derby eligible of Mrs. Hertz, was not worked with the other Derby-colts this morning. Track and weather conditions were not propitious for pretentious trials, though light overnight rains had laid the dust on the track, it was still deep on the inside, being several seconds slow. Reigh Count had Larry Mills up. while Reigh Olga had Chick Lang on his back. The pair began at the seven-eighths post and Reigh Count, taking the lead, galloped two lengths in advance of his stablemate for the first three-quarters, where the Lehman colt dropped out. INSTRUCTS RIDF.H. Trainer Michell had instructed the rider of Reigh Count to make the seven-eighths in 1:32, and the boy rated the colt faultlessly by coming within two-fifths of a second of that time. Reigh Count galloped most impressively and could have shaded his time had his rider not been compelled to take him wide rounding the head of the home stretch where the going was the deepest. The watches caught him in the following fractions: :50, 1*34. 1 :162.-,, 1:31% and 1.47*3. In commenting on Reigh Counts preparation for the Derby, trainer Michell declared that he had never trained a colt With bettor satisfaction. "He will go to the post a thoroughly fit horse and whether he wins or loses the Derby, the preparation he is now receiving will not prevent him from starting in subsequent races," is the way Mr. Michell summarizes the situation. Continuing, he said : "Many a good horse has lost an important race that he should have won simply because he was not in condition, and inferior horses have won for the opposite reason. Those who want Reigh Count to win the Derby can rest assured that he will be in a thorough state of preparation on the afternoon of the big race." George Barnes home-bred colt, Whiskarm. made a work which watchers at Churchill Dowtis rubbed their eyes in no little astonishment, when th2 son of Whiskaway — Army-Maid, with Jockey C. Churchman up, galloped the fastest mile of the season at that track. It was the first time the colt had been asked to traverse the distance and he created no end of favorable comment when he finished the route in 1 :45%. This fine performance supplemental the colts good trail of last Monday when he ran three-quarters in 1 :1S. This morning he began at the seven-eighths ; post and worked back to that point. BEGINS SLOWLY. He began rather slowly, as indicated by the first half mile which he negotiated in :50, in the second half, however, he struck his stride and fairly- flew over the ground. Showing a fine burst of speed in the final quarter, he ran the seven-eighths in 1 :32 and ran the final eighth of the mile in :13%, which is fast fur a colt traversing a mile at this stage of the training season. Owner . Barnes, who is training Whiskarm, remarked while the colt was cooling out that his most recent work convinced him that the colt was ; a stayer and would be right at home over . the Derby route of a mile and a quarter. W. EL Whilehouses Colonel Shaw showed to advantage when Don Johnson sent him a mile at an even pace. Jockey Stanley Stretton was in the saddle and he rated the , colt nicely by getting him to cover the hall in :55 and the mile in 1 :50. Dixie Prince, in i the stable of Harned Brothers, was sent thre.-qiiarteis in 1:23%. This was in preparation for a gallop at one . mile which the colt will be given next Sunday. Trainer Dick Brooks indulged Bray-bant in a slow mile in 1:55. Royal Julian, being prepared to start in the Clark Handicap, ran a mile in 1:47%. . Rolled Stocking, another aspirant for Clark [ Handicap honors, was galloped three-eighths i *n :37 V B. B. Williams, who has the horses of the ! Bloomficld Stable at Xashville, is due to ship the stable here next week. Shipment has ; . been delayed due to sickness of a number of r the stables juveniles.
